Internet Governance Forum USA

On July 21st, 2010, I will host the Internet Governance Forum for the United States at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC. The IGF US is an event open to the public to discuss what the Internet should be in the United States in the future and how we can get there. One of the critical issues that we will discuss is the state of Internet information security. How do we reduce the negative impact of cybercrime on Internet users in the US? How do we make users feel confident about conducting business and exchanging information safely on the Internet?  Please join us and help us identify the most important initiatives that you believe the people, corporations and/or the government in the United States should undertake to improve Internet information security in the United States, and by extension worldwide, in the  near future.

International Privacy Day

January 28 is International Privacy Day. Think and act about privacy:endorse the Madrid Privacy Declaration.

January 28 is international privacy day, a good occasion to think about the important human value of privacy in light of relentless technological progress and mounting fears about physical and information security. Activists and professionals from great organizations like the Electronic Privacy Information Center, with an online presence at www.epic.org, commemorate this day by reaching out to audiences in the United States, Mexico and Brussels to spread the word.

The Madrid Privacy Declaration is a grass roots document that reaffirms international instruments for privacy protection, identifies new challenges, and calls for concrete actions. The declaration is available online at www.thepublicvoice.org/madrid-declaration/

Information Security Course

Posted by Pablo Molina at 6:36 AM - Categories: Announcements

After teaching Ethics in Technology Management at the Main Campus in the fall, I am preparing to teach Managing Information Security on Tuesdays from 5:40pm to 7:40pm in the spring. I welcome your comments throughout the semester and hope that we can all learn from this experience. Please do not hesitate to bring interesting information security issues and news to my attention. Please contact me if you are interested in attending one or more class sessions as a guest.

The Managing Information Security course is designed for managers and executives involved in the protection of IT systems. This course prepares students to anticipate information security threats and to develop effective strategies to defend against them. Students will learn the core concepts of information security. They will study cryptography and information security of operating systems, applications, databases and networks. The course will be taught with a managerial perspective focusing on risk management, economics and policies, including legal and privacy issues.   Professional guests from various fields—such as business, law and government—will present case studies representative of their experiences.  We will use the following textbook: Security in Computing, Fourth Edition, Charles P. Pfleeger and Shari Lawrence Pfleeger, Prentice Hall ISBN: 0-13-239077-9.

After completing the course, students should be familiar with information security concepts and understand the managerial responsibilities and dilemmas of information security.

In Challenging Times, Challenging Technologies

Posted by Pablo Molina at 9:53 AM - Categories: Announcements

In challenging times, technology helps most campus departments and processes become more efficient. Pioneering technology services like digital class recordings, web conferencing services, and online exam delivery provide us with academic continuity for an H1N1 swine flu pandemic or other emergencies that may keep students and faculty away from the campus. These technologies give us more flexibility to conduct our activities and they can help us reduce our carbon footprint.

Ahead of us we have many exciting new initiatives. Behind the scenes, we will continue to improve on the new student information system for the University, MyAccess, and our new Cisco Voice-Over-IP phone system. We will replace most of the aging computer servers in our data center with green technologies like virtualized servers.  In a few months, we will adopt some of the technologies just released or about to be released by Microsoft: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and Exchange 2010.

With the sponsorship of Dean Aleinikoff and in wide consultation with faculty, staff, and students, the Communications and the Information Systems and Technology departments are working on the web site redesign to overhaul the online presence of the institution. Our goal is to provide reliable, easy-to-use web services to community members and over one million annual visitors from all over the world. Disability compliance, search engine optimization, information security and privacy will continue to be key characteristics of our web presence. Behind the scenes, a new content management system must accommodate the plurality of views and work methods of our web contributors.

Annual Technology Survey

Posted by Pablo Molina at 10:16 AM - Categories: Announcements

In 2008, 349 students answered the questions of the annual technology survey. Please show that you care about making the Georgetown University Law Center a better place and take a couple of minutes to answer a handful of multiple choice questions, with or without comments, by clicking on http://www.law.georgetown.edu/forms/?formid=269. In 2001, I founded the Law CIO Group for technology officers from the top law schools in the US and the UK. This year some of these schools are adopting the same survey questions as Georgetown Law so that we can compare results. The survey is critical to encourage school administrators to support technology initiatives benefitting the students. It also provides team members with student feedback and helps ups improve technology services. The survey closes on Friday, February 6, 2009, at 2:00pm. I also would like to encourage faculty and staff members to provide direct feedback by email, over the phone, or in person to any member of the technology team.
