TV program on high-tech courtrooms

Posted by Pablo Molina at 6:15 PM - Categories: New buildings

The high-tech courtrooms here at the Law Center are the subject of a story that aired in Hispanics Today on NBC affiliates in April. The five-minute segment features interviews with several people at the Law Center and demonstrates how faculty and students use the technology. The video clip is also available on-line, in Real Player format, at: http://media.law.georgetown.edu:8080/ramgen/ballantyne/mootcourt.rm

Setting expectations

Posted by Pablo Molina at 5:05 PM - Categories: New buildings

The first two weeks of the semester were difficult. The network and IP-phone systems went down a few times on account of different problems, mostly faulty network electronics and wiring in new buildings. We are working with all technology partners to address problems. On September 8, I addressed the faculty to thank them for their patience and keep them informed. I opened my report by saying: "A year ago I stood before you announcing technology outages as the new buildings neared completion. As you can see by yourselves, I am keeping my promises." In general, I am asking the community to be patient and expect outages during the month of September. The new buildings wiring was weeks behind schedule, engineering was crammed in a few days instead of the planned one-month period, and there was hardly any time for testing.

Ingenuity

Posted by Pablo Molina at 3:29 PM - Categories: New buildings

Our Italian-Venezuelan Network Engineer, Eduardo Simonetti surprised us with his ingenuity yesterday. Instead of relying on expensive fiber optics equipment, he performed the most basic fiber optics tests by pointing a flashlight to one end of the fiber to see whether or not the light would come out at the other end. His discovery prompted the wiring company to test and redo several fiber optics connections.

Wiring history

Posted by Pablo Molina at 12:39 PM - Categories: New buildings

Historically, state-of-the-art technology is not uncommon to the site of our new buildings. Earthworks for the campus completion project produced unexpected findings. Excavation at 10 feet of sediments deposited about 100 years ago uncovered some glass fragments, proof that city officials deployed a fiber optics network in the DC area around the turn of the twentieth century. Excavations at 20 feet of sediments deposited about 250 years ago uncovered copper fragments, proof that the city founders had established a telephone network around 1750. Excavations at 40 feet of sediments deposited about 400 years ago did not uncover glass or copper fragments, proof that the Nacosin Indians, of Algonquin lineage, had already deployed a wireless network.
