Setting expectations

The first two weeks of the semester were difficult. The network and IP-phone systems went down a few times on account of different problems, mostly faulty network electronics and wiring in new buildings. We are working with all technology partners to address problems. On September 8, I addressed the faculty to thank them for their patience and keep them informed. I opened my report by saying: "A year ago I stood before you announcing technology outages as the new buildings neared completion. As you can see by yourselves, I am keeping my promises." In general, I am asking the community to be patient and expect outages during the month of September. The new buildings wiring was weeks behind schedule, engineering was crammed in a few days instead of the planned one-month period, and there was hardly any time for testing.
