Cover Letter Checklist ruler
  • Format should reflect the standard letter format.
  • Proofread. There should be no errors in grammar, spelling or punctuation.
  • Tailor each cover letter to reflect the qualifications required for that position.
  • The letter is personally signed.
  • Print on 8 1/2 x 11” white or off-white heavy bond paper that matches your resume paper.
  • The letter should be no more than one page in length.
  • The content should include the following:
  • Either (1) your name, address, and telephone number are centered as in letterhead, or (2) your address is typed in the upper right corner.
  • The date is a two lines below your address.
  • The addressee’s name, title, name of firm, and the address appear flush left, two lines below the date.
  • The letter begins with “Dear _____:” and addresses a person by name. Call the employer to obtain exact contact information if you do not already have the contact’s name.
  • Explains who you are and states the position for which you are applying.
  • Explains your particular interest in both the position and the employer.
  • Clearly demonstrates the relationship between the employer ’s work and your experience or career interests.
  • Does not discuss weaknesses or flaws.
  • Thanks the employer for their consideration.
  • Restates your interest in the firm.
  • Indicates that you will follow up with them shortly.
  • Should be aligned with your address.
  • "Very truly yours” or “Sincerely” are the most appropriate closings.
  • Indicate in the lower left corner whether you are including any enclosures and the number of such enclosures [e.g., "Enclosures (2)"].
