-
Thoroughly prepare for each interview by researching the employer and the particular requirements of the position. One size does not fit all.
-
Bring extra copies of your resume, transcript, references and writing sample to all interviews.
-
Review the information available in the LL.M Professional Development Manual related to
Effective Interviewing.
-
Prepare a list of questions specific to the employer and individual interviewers.
-
Identify and be prepared to articulate how you are well suited for this particular job or employer.
-
Distill the most important information you want to convey during the interview down to five or six “selling points” and create an outline to organize your thoughts.
-
Anticipate and prepare for difficult questions.
-
Rehearse responses to both difficult and expected questions. Practice with a classmate or friend to become comfortable with verbalizing your responses.
-
Confirm the time and location of the interview the day prior to the meeting.
-
Give yourself enough time to get ready the day of the interview.
-
Plan enough travel time in case of unexpected delays. Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before the interview.
-
Give a firm handshake and maintain appropriate eye contact.
-
Remain professional and polite throughout the interview. Err on the side of being more conservative, both in dress and manner, than your interviewer.
-
Do not forget to say “thank you,” and request a business card from each interviewer.
-
Do a self-assessment following the interview. Consider meeting with Graduate Professional Development during a
drop-in session to evaluate the interview and possible improvements.
-
Promptly write concise and professional
thank you letters. Use e-mail if appropriate.
