Resources Employer Web Sites The Web is a great resource for learning more about individual employers. Most mid-sized and large employers have Web sites describing their practice areas, profiling their attorneys and outlining their application procedures. LEXIS-NEXIS LEXIS-NEXIS has both the NALP Directory, the largest legal employer hiring directory, and Martindale Hubbell, the most extensive listing of attorneys nationwide, as well as extensive files on government offices, attorneys, judges, corporations, and more. Be sure to investigate it. WESTLAW Westlaw has the following directories on line: Almanac of Federal Judiciary, Directory of Bankruptcy Attorneys, and Foundation Directory. It also has a large number of general and legal newspapers. NALP Directory of Legal Employers http://nalpdirectory.com/?school=50904 NALPDirectory.com is an online, searchable database of firms, including indexes by location, by practice area keyword, and by office size. Mail merge functions are also available through the site. Print versions of the same database are available in the OCS library. The NALP Directory must be accessed through the OCS Web site. PSLawNet (non-profits and government) The Office Public Interest and Career Services subscribes to this national database of government and non-profit employers. This is the best source for students seeking public interest work. It allows students to conduct individually tailored searches for positions in government and non-profits throughout the nation. The “Opportunities” database is geared towards paid positions, while the “Organizations” database is useful for students looking to volunteer their time. This is accessible on all computers in the library. You just need to register as a Georgetown Law student. Vault http://careerinsider.vault.com/wps/portal/careerinsider?parrefer=723 At Vault you can research law firms, investment banks, and management consulting firms. The Vault must be accessed through the OCS Web site (this will give you access to the entire library of resources). Martindale-Hubbell Martindale-Hubbell provides the most exhaustive library of law firms in the nation and abroad. The database is searchable by geographic area, specialization, law school, lawyer name, and firm size. It is especially good for compiling direct mailings for smaller cities and towns. Law.com This Web site publishes articles from national and regional newspapers and magazines. Chamber and Partners Publishing The Chambers Web site has searchable online versions of their guides to the legal profession. American Bar Association The American Bar Association Web site provides useful legal information such as bar admission requirements for different states and legal education statistics. The National Conference of Bar Examiners The NCBE provides bar admission statistics as well as information on the multi-state tests. Association of Corporate Counsel The Association of Corporate Counsel Web site offers a variety of legal resources, mostly geared towards in-house counseling. The Leadership Library (Yellow Books) The Web site allows students to search for people based on People, Organization, and Location and provides contact information for those meeting the specified criteria. The Leadership Library can be useful for networking and informational interviewing. This Web site must be accessed using the above link, and only from a computer connected to a server of the Law Center. Office of Career Services Web site www.law.georgetown.edu/career/ The Office of Career Services Web site provides links to job search Web sites, including Georgetown job postings on Symplicity, as well as lists of employers that have previously hired Georgetown students. It also offers handbooks and guides about job search strategies. Office of Public Interest and Community Service Web site The OPICS Web site provides links to helpful publications and job search resources based on public interest practice areas. It also provides career planning strategies and guides about resumes, cover letters, and interviews. The Legal Employment Search Web site The Web site provides links to Web sites related to legal employment, including staffing groups, legal associations, and job search databases. Federal Employment of Non-Citizens http://www.opm.gov/hr_practitioners/lawsregulations/citizenship/ The Federal Government gives strong priority to hiring United States citizens and nationals, but non-citizens may be hired in certain circumstances.
