Applicants must have excellent English language writing and speaking ability. The Admissions Committee strongly recommends SJD applicants submit a valid TOEFL score report to supplement their SJD application. Georgetown requires a score exceeding 100 points on the internet-based TOEFL exam (with minimum scores of 25 in each of the four sections) or 600 on the paper-based TOEFL exam (with minimum scores of 60 in each of the three sections). Current or former Georgetown LL.M. students for whom the TOEFL was waived should contact the Office of Graduate Admissions to ascertain whether that waiver will apply to their S.J.D. application. You can find more information about the TOEFL exam, as well as the TOEFL Bulletin of Information and registration form here.

In appropriate circumstances (normally the completion of an undergraduate or first law degree program which was taught in an English-speaking country), the Graduate Admissions Committee will consider requests for a waiver of the TOEFL requirement. If you wish to request a waiver of the TOEFL requirement, please attach a statement explaining the basis for your request. Note: a 1-year LL.M. degree program completed prior to applying to Georgetown is normally not considered a sufficient basis for a TOEFL waiver.
