Applying to Transfer to Georgetown Law

Admissions Information

Georgetown Law reviews transfer applications for both Spring and Fall semester admission. Transfer applicants, who have completed only one year at an ABA-accredited law school, are admitted to the second year class on a space available basis.

Competitive candidates are typically in the top 15% of their current law school class with an A-/B+ average.

Transfer applicants are considered for either the Full-time or Part-time Division (or both). Georgetown Law will accept for transfer a maximum of 31 semester hours earned at a student's previous institution (the number of semester hours earned by our first-year day students).  Credit is not usually granted for law school courses beyond the first year.

Application Requirements

Application Checklist

Transfer applicants must submit all of the following materials:

    • Completed Transfer Application Form
    • Non-refundable $85 application fee
    • Current law school transcript (through Summer term for Spring entry or through Spring term for Fall entry)
    • JD Transfer Certification Form: This form must be sent directly to Georgetown Law, not through CAS.  Note: Georgetown Law does not require that transfer applicants submit a letter of good standing from their current law school.  A letter of good standing may serve to take the place of the JD Transfer Certification Form, however, if possible, such letters should include class rank if available and description of any disciplinary action.
    • Recommendation from a law school faculty member
    • Personal statement which should include the reasons for requesting the transfer
    • Resume
    • CAS report (see below)

All applicants must register with CAS.  Georgetown Law will not accept copies of CAS reports from the applicant's current law school. Once an applicant registers with CAS and submits an application the Admissions Office will automatically request a copy of the applicant's CAS report.

Applicants may send their letter(s) of recommendation and transcripts either through CAS or directly to the Georgetown Law Admissions Office.

Note: Georgetown Law requires only one letter of recommendation or evaluation, although additional letters will be accepted. If you would like the Committee to consider additional recommendations before rendering a decision, complete the "hold request" section on the second page of our application.  If you have already submitted your application, you are welcome to email us at admis@law.georgetown.edu to request that the Committee holds your application until any additional recommendation(s) are received.  Please include the name(s) of your recommender(s) and/or evaluator(s).

Early Action

If Georgetown Law receives your completed application by March 15, 2012, your admissions decision will be mailed to you by early May. To be eligible for the Early Action Program, Georgetown Law must receive your complete first semester, first-year grades from your law school.  Second semester grades are not required to apply under Early Action.  (However, the Admissions Committee typically will not consider an application for admissions until an applicant has 3 reported grades on his or her transcript.)

Early Action acceptances are not binding on the applicants.

Regular Action

Regular Action admissions decisions are generally not made before July. All files are reviewed on a rolling basis, therefore, we encourage applicants to complete their files as quickly as possible. To be eligible for the Regular Action Program, Georgetown Law must receive complete first and second semester, first-year grades from your law school. Although the deadline is June 15, applicants are encouraged to apply by June 1.

Transfer FAQs

Am I eligible to apply to transfer to Georgetown Law? Applicants may only apply if, by the time they matriculate, they will have taken only two semesters worth of classes. In rare circumstances, applicants who have completed 3 part-time semesters by the time they will matriculate, may apply.
May I apply for spring admission? Typically, only students who initially entered law school in the spring of the prior year may apply for spring admission. In rare circumstances, applicants who have completed 3 part-time semesters by the time they will matriculate, may apply for spring admission (see above).
May part-time students apply to transfer into the full-time program? Yes.
How competitive is the transfer process? Last year we received over 600 applications for Fall 2011 transfer. To be competitive, students should be in the top 15% of their class with an A-/B+ average.
May I apply to transfer Early Action based upon my fall grades alone? Yes.  However, the Admissions Committee typically will not consider an application for admissions until an applicant has 3 reported grades on his or her transcript.
When should I apply? As early as possible.
May transfer students participate in the Fall Recruitment Program? Yes. The Office of Career Services will do its best to accommodate transfer students' participation in the Fall Recruitment Program.
May transfer students participate in a journal? Yes. Transfer students who are interested in journal membership must participate in the write-on competition. Those who have been admitted and have paid their deposit(s) prior to the deadline (typically in mid July) may participate in the 2012 journal write-on competition. Those admitted after the deadline will be given an opportunity to participate in the transfer competition beginning in June 2013.
May I submit an LSAC Evaluation Form in lieu of a traditional letter of recommendation? Yes.
