2014 Georgetown Law Women's Forum
"Thinking Outside the Box"
Georgetown Law is honored to announce the recipients of the 2014 Alumnae Award: The Honorable Marilyn L. Milian (L'84) and Sara Crown Star (L'85). Created in 1998, the Georgetown Law Alumnae Award is given to women graduates in recognition of their contributions to the legal profession, their communities and the Law Center.
As a Georgetown Law student, Milian recalls watching "The People's Court" with her classmates. Today, as the first Latina judge to host a nationally syndicated television court show, she presides over the "The People's Court." The native of Queens, NY has spent time in many other courtrooms as well. Then-Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed her to the Miami Circuit Court in 1999, where she served in the criminal division, and she previously spent five years on the Miami County Court.
From 1984 to 1994, Milian was an assistant state attorney for the Dade County State Attorney's Office. Milian appears as a legal expert on CNN, Fox News and HLN, among other outlets. She is dedicated to philanthropic work, having served as the 2010-2011 spokesperson for the FBI's Safe Online Surfing campaign and as an ambassador of south Florida's After-School All-Stars program. She is also a well known advocate against domestic violence.
Star is a community leader, based in Chicago, who is active in numerous non-profit and charitable organizations, focused particularly on early childhood education, medical research and health care, and Jewish community leadership and philanthropy. She is a director of the Crown Family Foundation and a member of the Georgetown Law Board of Visitors.
Among her many contributions to Georgetown Law, Star created the Bazelon Fellowship at Washington, D.C.'s Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, an intensive internship for select graduates of the Law Center. She is also working to develop a Georgetown Law program in basic business education for future attorneys. A graduate of the Wexner Heritage Program for transformative Jewish leadership, Sara has become a major contributor to the American Jewish community. She is incoming chair of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s 2015 campaign and a governor of Hebrew Union College.
The 2014 Alumnae Award recipients will be recognized during the Women's Forum Luncheon on April 25, 2014. Please contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at 202.662.4078 or email@example.com to register.
