Edward C. Cosgrove, of Cosgrove Law Firm in Buffalo, N.Y., was elected chair of the New York State Bar Association’s 4,000-member trial lawyers section. Cosgrove focuses his practice on complex civil and criminal litigation.

John J. Curtin Jr., head of the litigation area of Bingham Dana, was appointed to chair the Coalition for Justice of the American Bar Association during the group’s recent annual meeting. Curtin, who focuses on general commercial litigation, will oversee the group’s efforts for court reform.

The Judicial Nomination Commission has nominated Howard I. Lipsey among five candidates to fill a vacancy on the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Lipsey is currently associate justice of the Rhode Island Family Court and an adjunct professor at the Roger Williams University School of Law.

After 39 years at the American Bankers Association in Washington, D.C., John Gill retired as general counsel. Gill will serve as a consultant for two years to the ABA legal department.

Lawrence A. Shulman, founding partner of the Rockville, Md.-based law firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, has been honored with the State of Israel Bonds City of Peace award. This award, presented by the legal and financial division of Israel Bonds, is in recognition of Shulman’s professional and civic achievements.

David C. Weiner and his wife, Charna E. Sherman (L’85), joined Squire, Sanders & Dempsey as a partner in the litigation group. Weiner continues to handle complex commercial litigation. In August, he completed six years on the ABA standing committee on the federal judiciary.

Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith, Ravin, Davis & Himmel announced that Martin E. Dollinger has joined the firm as partner in the real estate department. Dollinger has been ranked among the top attorneys in New Jersey in real estate law in Chambers USA America’s Leading Business Lawyers 2003-2004.

Rebecca Laird was elected to the board of foundation of Women in Housing and Finance. Laird is a partner in the law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, where she practices financial institutions law.

Ober|Kaler announced that Tom Coons, principal in its health law department, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Health Lawyers Association. Coons focuses on health care issues involving Medicare payment, coverage and compliance. He lives in Towson, Md.

Anthony C. Maidenberg currently serves as vice president of the Independent Colleges of Indiana, the umbrella organization for Indiana’s 31 independent colleges and universities. Maidenberg is a former mayor of Marion, Ind., and a former Indiana state senator.

Christopher E. Dunne was recently elected to the Haverford College board of managers and serves on a charitable board in Philadelphia. Dunne is a partner at Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen in Philadelphia.

The law firm of Mitchell, McNutt & Sams has announced that Michael Farrell has joined the firm in the Jackson, Miss., office and will concentrate his practice in labor and employment law and commercial litigation.

Joseph L. Fink was honored on May 3rd with the 2003 Annual Alumni Award of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. This is the top award conferred by the school’s alumni association. Fink is vice president for corporate relations and economic outreach and associate vice president for research at the University of Kentucky.

Robert Katz is currently a trial lawyer and sits on the executive committee of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger & Hollander, the fifth largest law firm in Maryland. Katz’s personal injury practice has grown from a staff of one part-time paralegal to over 25 employees. He lives in Potomac, Md.

Clifford A. Rieders has been appointed a member of the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority. Rieders is immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association.

Patricia V. Trumbull has been re-appointed to chief federal magistrate for northern California. This is Trumbull’s third eight-year term.

D.C.’s Kleinfeld Kaplan and Becker recently added Anthony Young to its ranks. Young will concentrate his practice on food and drug law as well as consumer protection issues.

The Hon. Anthony J. DePanfilis has been re-elected for another four-year term as the Judge of Probate for the Norwalk-Wilton District of Connecticut. DePanfilis continues as managing partner of DePanfilis and Vallerie, in Norwalk, Conn.

Larry H. Spector, a partner in the business litigation practice group of Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen, has been elected chairman of the Philadelphia Board of the Anti-Defamation League.

David Zisser has joined Isaacson, Rosenbaum, Woods & Levy as of counsel and will continue to focus his trial practice on securities litigation, business litigation, and commercial litigation.

     Wachovia Securities and Prudential Securities recently named Stephen T. Gannon as general counsel of their combined retail brokerage operations. The combined firm will be headquartered in Richmond, Va. In December 2002, David Burman argued successfully before the U.S. Supreme Court. The case involved issues surrounding IOLTA (Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts).

Teresa M. Polino recently joined Greenberg Traurig’s Washington, D.C. office as shareholder. Polino practices international trade and customs law and is a founding member of the D.C. chapter of Women in International Trade.

Alan DiSciullo was elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. He spoke and moderated at the Practising Law Institute and ABA on commercial real estate issues

Katherine A. Newell spoke at Princeton University in May 2003 at a conference hosted by the New Jersey Educational Facilities Authority and Princeton. Newell discussed “Legal Issues Relating to the Use of Swaps and Other Derivatives in the Municipal Marketplace.” Jim O’Sullivan is special assistant to the director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.

The District of Columbia chapter of the American Mothers, Inc. has named Mary A. Gooden Terrell as the District of Columbia Mother of the Year for 2003. Terrell is associate judge of the D.C. Superior Court and founder of the High Tea Society (a nonprofit mentoring organization for inner city girls from economically disadvantaged areas who attend D.C. public schools.)

     Bill LaForge has joined the Washington, D.C., office of Winstead Sechrest & Minick as shareholder. LaForge specializes in federal government relations.

Gov. James McGreevey (D-N.J.) served as a commencement speaker at Rutgers University at Newark, this spring. McGreevey currently serves as the 51st governor of the State of New Jersey. In recognition of her longstanding involvement in the practice of commercial finance law, Alston & Bird partner Lynn A. Soukup has been elected a fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers. Soukup is a partner in the firm’s leveraged capital and capital markets groups.

Donna Bobbish has joined the D.C. office of Chadbourne & Parke as counsel in the project finance practice.

David Lichter and his wife, Mayra, have started their own law firm, David Lichter & Associates, in Aventura, Fla. The firm specializes in mediation, business litigation, securities arbitration, software piracy and intellectual property rights enforcement and litigation.

Peter McDonough was promoted to general counsel at Princeton University. Prior to this appointment, McDonough served as university counsel since 1990. He resides in Lawrenceville, N.J. In Seattle, Anthony Shapiro, a partner in the firm of Hagens Berman, won $1.1 million in damages for a client injured in an auto accident. Maine state Senator Sharon Treat was recently elected majority leader of the Maine Senate.

The Rockville, Md.-based law firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker has announced that William F. Askinazi has joined the firm as of counsel. Askinazi concentrates his practice on tort, insurance, and business risk management issues.

Dennis Kennedy has opened the Dennis Kennedy law firm, where he will focus on computer law. Kennedy is also an adjunct professor of law at the Washington University School of Law.

Robert Lawrence joined Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe as partner in the energy and project finance group.

Alisa J. Baker has opened her own law firm in San Carlos, Calif. Baker will focus on helping companies, executives, and boards of directors structure compensation programs and executive agreements. Her comprehensive book on equity compensation, The Stock Options Book, is a required text at Santa Clara University.

Howard Bauleke has served as chief of staff since 1999 for U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore (D-KS). Cozen O’Connor announced the promotion of Kathleen A. Drapeau to senior member of the firm. Drapeau practices in the firm’s New York office.

Al Grieshaber (LL.M.) was appointed manager of Sanford, Fla., after serving the city of Albany, Ga., as city attorney. Global Gold Corporation announced that Van Z. Krikorian has joined as vice president and general counsel. Krikorian will be responsible for negotiating all contracts and overseeing all international operating issues.

Tyree P. Jones joined Reed Smith Crosby Heafey as counsel to its employment group. Jones specializes in employment litigation.

John D. Thompson has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America 2003-2004 for his practice in labor and employment law.

Thompson is a partner in the litigation department at Rider Bennett.

David H. Laufman, formerly chief of staff to the deputy attorney general of the United States, has been appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, where he will concentrate on national security matters.

Ober|Kaler announced that E. Scott Johnson, chair of the firm’s intellectual property group, has been elected chair of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. Johnson is also a board member of Young Audiences of Maryland and a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Mark Murphy was named director of athletics at Northwestern University. Murphy, who played safety for the Washington Redskins for eight seasons, has served as athletic director at Colgate since 1992.

Rodney Jacob is currently a partner at the law firm of Calvo & Clark in Tamuning, Guam.

Victor R. Siclari became a partner in the investment and asset management group of Reed Smith when it acquired the legal department of Federated Investors.

     Siclari was also recently elected a director for Hearth, a nonprofit organization that provides displaced women and children with temporary housing and education so they can support themselves.

Global Counsel 3000 has identified Lisa Thornton as one of the leading attorneys in South Africa in the “technology, media and communications” category. Thornton heads her own firm, Lisa Thornton, Inc.

Sami Toutounji and his wife, Emma, are pleased to announce the arrival of their third daughter, Paulina Michele, born in March 2003. Toutounji is a partner of Shearman & Sterling and has practiced from the firm’s Paris office since 1993.

     Robert McDade of Bloomington, Ill. has been named vice president of trust services for Country Trust Bank. In his new position, McDade is responsible for the overall marketing, development and administration of all fiduciary activities at Country Trust. He is currently assistant general counsel in the Illinois Agricultural Association Office of the general counsel.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom announced that Armando Gomez (LL.M.’97) has become a partner of the firm. Gomez specializes in tax law in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Franklin Pierce College announced the appointment of Julie Ann Johnson to its board of trustees. She began her four-year term in fall 2003. Johnson is vice president of marketing at Warburg Pincus and lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. Beth Lyon has been selected by the Association of American Law Schools’ section on clinical legal education to receive the Shanara Gilbert Emerging Clinician Award. The award honors a junior clinical professor who has demonstrated a commitment to teaching and achieving social justice, an interest in clinical legal education, and a passion for providing legal services and access to justice to individuals and groups most in need.
