The Asterisks Bug
In the past, some Apple/Mac users who used Microsoft Word 2008 or 2011 to write their exams or papers have reported that the text within their documents was converted to asterisks or odd symbols. This is a known bug that affects Microsoft Word 2008 and Microsoft Word 2011 (Apples/Macs only). Once the asterisks bug has infected your document, it cannot be fixed. Your best protection against the asterisks bug is to update both your Apple/Mac operating system and your version of Microsoft Office.
Please be advised that the Law Center IST Department has seen rare cases of the asterisks bug affecting updated computers. Should this occur during your exam, close Microsoft Word immediately without saving your document.
Another option to avoid the asterisks bug is to write your exam in Apple Pages. You can purchase it through the Apps Store. To get there, click on the Apple icon, located in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Choose the App Store option. When the App Store window opens, type Pages in the search box in the upper, right-hand corner of the window. The Pages icon should appear in the top row. The cost is $19.99. (Pages is a free download for any Mac purchased after October 2013.)
