Introduction to Career Planning

Deciding to attend law school is not a career choice. The legal field comprises a vast number of careers that require many different kinds of people. The skills necessary to be a successful criminal defense attorney are different from those required to be a lobbyist or a tax attorney. Even if you are quite pleased with your decision to attend law school, you still have a number of career decisions to make and you have an immense number of opportunities before you. Take a look at the following timeline to get an idea of what you can do during your first year to help prepare for your future legal career. OCS Programs for First-Year Students

OCS plans a number of programs throughout the year geared to first-year students. We start with an Orientation and a Resume Workshop in late October.

We then have our annual "World of Choices" program - OCS, the Office of Public Interest and Community Service (OPICS), and the Office of Alumni Affairs sponsor this major program to provide information to help you understand the range of legal career choices available to law school graduates. The day usually includes panels and networking opportunities featuring Georgetown alumni practicing in a wide variety of areas.

In November, OCS and OPICS jointly conduct a "Finding and Funding" series, designed to provide specific advice on how to find, apply for and fund jobs in the government, public sector, private sector and international arena.

In the Spring, we offer many programs designed to educate you on different career options. We have sessions on different geographic markets, and workshops tailored to specific paths such as small firms or judicial internships. We also have an orientation to introduce you to Early Interview Week, which takes place in August just before you begin your second year.

Finally, we add different programs each year, depending on student interest! Last year we had a panel on Using your JD in the Business World, and one on Diversity in Law Firms. Check your weekly e-mail and What’s Happening for announcements about upcoming programs.
