The following programs offer funded internships in specific practice areas or locations:
AFL-CIO Law Student Union Summer
Labor law internships with affiliated unions
$600/week stipend plus transportation and housing expenses
Application deadline: January 22, 2012 for 1Ls; October 24, 2011 for 2Ls
Google Policy Fellowship
Policy internships for law students interested in internet and technology policy
Participating organizations are based in either Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA
$7500 stipend

Haywood Burns Fellowship for Social and Economic Justice, National Lawyer’s Guild
Work for a preselected public interest organization
$2,000 stipend
Application deadline: January 20, 2013 (application available in late fall)
Janet Steiger Fellowship Program
Work in the consumer protection departments of selected State Attorneys General offices
$5,000 stipend
Application deadline: Oct. 19, 2012
Legal Aid Association of California Dan Bradley Summer Fellowship Program
Work at an LAAC-affiliated legal services program in California
$3,000 stipend from LAAC, host organization provdes $500

New Jersey Public Interest Legal Intern Fellowship Program
Work at a public interest legal service organization in NJ
$550 per week for rising 2nd year students and $750 per week for rising 3rd year students

Peggy Browning Fund Summer Internship
Work for a labor-related organization
$4,500 stipend
Application deadline: January 13, 2012
Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) of Chicago Summer Internship Program
Work for one of 25+ public interest legal service organizations in Chicago
$5,000 stipend
Application deadline: The Summer 2013 application period for PILI Internships opened on October 15th for 2Ls and will open on December 1st for 1Ls.
Many programs complete their hiring early in the cycle, so it is recommended that candidates apply as early as possible.
The following programs offer funding to supplement a volunteer internship:
ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty/John J. Curtin, Jr. Legal Internship
Work for a nonprofit organization that provides legal aid to homeless and indigent people.
$2,500 stipend

Arthur C. Helton Fellowship Program, American Society for International Law
Pursue field work or research on issue involving international law and human rights
$1,000 microgrant

Asian American Law Fund of New York
Work for a nonprofit organization that serves the NY Asian American community
$3,500 stipend

Asian Pacific American Bar Association Educational Fund (AEF) - Washington, D.C.
Work with public interest organization that benefits either the Asian Pacific American community or the metropolitan Washington, D.C. community-at-large
$2,500 stipend

Bergstrom Child Welfare Law Summer Fellowship
Supports law students working for a nationwide child advocacy/child welfare organization.
$500 stipend to attend intensive child welfare law training at the University of Michigan; limited additional stipend for selected interns.

Equal Justice America Legal Service Fellowships
Work for a nonprofit organization which providing direct legal representation
Up to $4,000 stipend. Please note: An Equal Justice America Fellowship cannot be combined with EJF.
Application deadline: March 25, 2013 (postmark deadline)
Equal Justice Works (EJW) Summer Corps Grant
Students must provide direct legal services to low-income and underserved individuals. Pure policy positions are not eligible. Some public defender positions qualify. See the site for information.
$1,132 education award voucher

Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation/ Robert E. Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund
Work with the FCC or other government agencies or entities with jurisdiction over the communications industry

Several fellowships awarded to work in different areas of LGBT rights

QLaw Summer Public Interest Grant Program
Internships serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ("LGBT") community or people with HIV/AIDS in Seattle, WA
$500 per week for up to 10 weeks
