Perspective on Poverty Law from the Bench - Thursday, June 27 from 12 - 1:30 at Jones Day (300 NJ Avenue)

The Washington Council of Lawyers and the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia are pleased to offer a free brown bag lunch speaker series for public interest summer interns.  The first program is entitled, "Perspectives on Poverty Law from the Bench,"  featuring DC Superior Court Associate Judges Jennifer Di Toro, Todd Edelman and Juliet McKenna, who will discuss the impact of poverty on the cases they hear, and how pro bono and public-interest attorneys make a difference in the administration of justice in the District of Columbia.

Demanding Justice Project – Summer 2013 (remote) and FALL 2013 (remote or in office)

Shared Hope International is a 501c3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Vancouver, Washington with an office in Arlington, Virginia (Rosslyn Metro). Shared Hope International works to combat sex slavery globally and restore the women and children who are victimized by this crime. Please see our website for a full description: www.sharedhope.org.

We have an immediate need for pro bono assistance with the Demanding Justice project. The Demanding Justice project grew out of the Protected Innocence Challenge and focuses on prosecutions of those who buy, or attempt to buy, sex with minors. The project will evaluate state and federal prosecutions of buyers, and will specifically analyze how demand is combatted in a few target areas. To complete the national research for this project, we will be tracking cases through various online search engines to identify cases where a buyer has been charged. We will then track the cases through to disposition or dismissal. Through online searches we have begun to identify individuals who have been charged with an offense for buying sex with a minor and we need pro bono assistance with accessing online court files (to the extent they are available online) to track the progress of each identified case. All of this information needs to be tracked and logged in our database where we are continuing to add cases as we identify them.

Upcoming Webinar – “Maximizing Your Job Search with PLIP 2013”

Next Wednesday, June 12, at 12:00 p.m. CST, Alissa J. Holterman from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Katharine Patterson of Patterson-Davis Consulting, and Mark Dighton, Director of Law School Relations for the Practising Law Institute and Administrative Director of their Patent Bar Course will participate in a web briefing entitled “Maximizing Your Job Search with PLIP 2013.”

They will discuss:
•    Why students should consider attending the Patent Law Interview Program, even if they don't get the number of interviews that they were expecting.
•    After students receive their preliminary interview schedule, what comes next?
•    What research students should do on the firms with which they got interviews.
•    When will students find out exactly who will be interviewing them, and what do they do then?
•    What materials should students prepare to bring with you to the Patent Program?
•    How does the Patent Program work?
•    How does the Patent Program fit into your bigger job-prospecting gameplans?

Listeners will be able to submit questions via email, and the presenters will answer questions either at the end of the briefing or individually by email after. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Patent Law Interview Program!
