Save the Dates – Interview Workshops in DC and New York!

As you learned in your Fall Recruiting Information Sessions, OCS hosts a series of interview workshops in New York and DC over the summer to help you prepare for the upcoming recruiting season.  In these workshops, you will learn tips for tackling tough interview questions, how to make the most of your past experience and ways to stand out (positively) from the crowd.  Please see below for dates, times and additional information.

Washington, DC
Thursday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m. – hosted by McDermott Will & Emery (500 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001)
The one-hour Interview Workshop will be followed by an informal mixer with McDermott’s Georgetown alumni and their summer associates on the firm’s rooftop terrace.  The mixer will provide an opportunity to learn more about the firm and practice your networking skills!  Please RSVP to attend this workshop through Symplicity by Wednesday, June 26.

Wednesday, August 7 at 6:00 p.m. – at the Law Center (Room TBD).  This program will be videotaped.

New York
Tuesday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. – hosted by Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (425 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10017)
The one-hour Interview Workshop will be followed by an informal mixer with Simpson Thacher attorneys and summer associates.  This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the firm and practice talking to attorneys before EIW!  To attend this workshop, please RSVP through Symplicity by Friday, July 5.

Public Interest Post Graduate Project Fellowships - What are they? How do I get one?

Project fellowships are designed to fund the creation of new, innovative public interest law projects or to serve the unmet legal needs of communities and individuals. Each applicant must develop a project proposal, usually in conjunction with a “sponsoring” organization (a non-profit employer that agrees to work with and host the candidate during his/her fellowship), and apply to foundations that pay the selected fellows’ salaries and provide support during the fellowship period. Skadden and Equal Justice Works are the most well-known project fellowship sponsors, but there are several other organizations that fund project fellowships in specific locations and/or in specific practice areas.

Prospective fellows can apply for a fellowship in one of two ways: First, students can apply to an organization that is already advertising for a potential fellow.  Solicitations from various organizations for project fellows cover the geographic and issue-area spectrums and can be found on PSJD or Symplicity as early as June!  Second, students can work with an organization that is not already soliciting for a fellow to create a fellowship of their own design.  To do this, students research organizations and talk with current staff about the prospect for creating a fellowship together.  Once a fellow and a host begin working together, they then create fellowship application materials to submit to Skadden, Equal Justice Works, or other various sponsors.

Note: Project-Based Fellowships are different than staff attorney or organization based fellowships which are established positions within existing organizations offered either at pre-determined intervals (e.g., every one or two years) or as funding allows. Hundreds of staff attorney fellowships are available every year.   Applications for staff attorney an organization-based fellowships are often due later in the fall, winter, or early spring and will be announced through PSJD and Symplicity.

First Clerkship Deadline is this Monday, June 3 at 5 pm

By this Monday, June 3, at 5 pm, all students and alumni wishing to mail judicial clerkship applications during the First Mailing must deliver their applications to Hotung 1008 and register in the Clerkships tab of Symplicity for the First Mailing.  All applications that meet the deadline will be delivered to chambers by June 28, the Federal Law Clerk Hiring Plan release date.  Postage is not required.

To accommodate those who cannot get there at lunch or before work, we are staying open late on Thursday, May 30.  Hotung 1008 will be open the following times to receive your clerkship applications:
•    Tuesday, May 28, 9 am – 5 pm
•    Wednesday, May 29, 9 am – 5 pm
•    Thursday, May 30, 9 am – 8 pm
•    Friday, May 31, 9 am – 5 pm
•    Monday, June 3, 9 am – 5 pm

Bring your clerkship packets, assembled according to the directions on this page, and fill out the First Mailing Form.  
 
Students who are not in DC this summer may send packages to the attention of Kabara Korth-Praskavich, Office of Career Services, 600 New Jersey Avenue, NW, Room 328, Washington, DC 20001.

As a reminder, you should include all materials in your clerkship application packets, but you will have the option to update your resume and transcript by emailing a PDF copy of each to Amy Killoran (alk59@law.georgetown.edu) by Monday, June 17, at 5 pm.

You will also need to create all of your OSCAR applications (including identifying your recommenders for each application) no later than Monday, June 17.  If a judge accepts applications through OSCAR, Georgetown policy is that you must apply through OSCAR.

Reminder: Early Clerkship Mailing Deadline MONDAY, May 20

Rising 3Ls and soon-to-be-graduates,  please remember that Monday, May 20, at 5 pm is the deadline to turn in your application packets for the Ninth Clerkship Mailing at OCS.  This is your last chance to send paper applications to judges before the official Federal Law Clerk Hiring Plan date!

Because of the volume of applications received, all applications received after this date will be part of the First Mailing, which will arrive in judges’ chambers on Friday, June 28.  The deadline for the First Mailing is Monday, June 3.
