What You Need to Know about the Bar Admission Process - Wed., 11/9 at 4pm

Join the Office of the Registrar for “What You Need to Know about the Bar Admission Process” on Wednesday, November 9, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in 202 McDonough Hall.  Find out how to get information about any state bar examination.  Learn from a DC bar examiner what scorers look for in bar exam responses.  Hear recent Georgetown Law grads discuss their experience of applying for and taking the bar.  Get briefed on cases relating to the Character and Fitness Evaluation.  This Bar information session will be taped onto streaming video and will be available for viewing online at http://www.law.georgetown.edu/registrar/bar.html.  Questions should be directed to Michael Frisch, Ethics Counsel and Adjunct Professor at the Law Center, at frischm@law.georgetown.edu or 202-662-9926.

Reminder: Veterans Law Event - Thurs., 11/10 at 12:30pm

The Military Law Society and OCS are co-sponsoring a presentation on Veterans Law, including a discussion about the history of veterans benefits, elements of a compensation claim, and opportunities at the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. The event will take place this Thursday, November 10, from 12:30-1:30pm, in McDonough room 110, and the Military Law Society will be providing pizza.

Four of the six new law clerks at the CAVC have attended this program, offered to DC area law schools, and summer internship applications are due in January – so the program is especially valuable for students looking to learn more about internship and clerkship opportunities at the CAVC.

A Few Upcoming Events Focusing on International Law and Arbitration

• November 4: CAROLA (Center for the Rule of Law in Latin America), and LALSA (Latin American Law Students Association) invite you to a brownbag conversation with Argentinean Constitutional Law Professor María Sofía Sagués to be held at the Georgetown Law Center on Friday, November 4, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at McDonough Room 206. Professor Sagués will present the topic: “Relationships between the jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and that of the supreme courts of Argentina, Peru, Costa Rica, and Venezuela.”
  
• November 4:  (a) The Rise of General Exceptions in Bilateral Investment Treaties, and (b) Investment Treaty Arbitration and Tobacco Control.  The Georgetown International Arbitration Society Fall Half-Day Conference (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) will feature two panels.   The program will be held on the Georgetown University Law Center’s campus, 600 New Jersey Ave., NW, in the Hotung International Law Building, Room 2000.

• November 29:  Forum Shopping in International Commercial Arbitration.  This lunch program is brought to you by the DC Bar International Dispute Resolution Committee, co-sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, North American Branch, D.C. Chapter.  The program will begin at 12:30 pm at the offices of Arnold and Porter, 555 12th Street, NW, 10th Floor (Metro Center Metro Station).

SIPLA Panel on Careers in Intellectual Property Law – Tues., 11/8 at 6pm

On Tuesday, November 8th (6-7:30pm), the Student Intellectual Property Law Association (SIPLA) will be hosting an intellectual property law career panel in Hotung 1000. 

A group of patent, copyright, and trademark lawyers from top DC firms and the USPTO will be on hand to talk about opportunities in IP, as well as their own experiences and day-to-day activities.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about careers in IP, meet local practitioners, and ask all your questions in an informal setting.  Refreshments will be served.

Careers in National Security Law Brown Bag Lunch - Tues., 10/18 at 12pm

The Center on National Security and the Law is pleased to host a brown bag lunch session featuring Timothy Keefer, former Chief Counsel for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties for the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on Tuesday, October 18th at 12pm in Hotung 2000.  Bring your own lunch; cookies will be served.

Mr. Keefer will discuss his career path, and his work at DHS and other government entities which covered a myriad of issues, including intelligence activities, airport screening and body scanners, security profiling, watchlists, the link with immigration, working with communities specifically affected by DHS, including Muslim populations, and more.
