1L FAQ: Now that I have received my first semester grades, should I include them on my resume? If so, how?

The general rule of thumb is that if your GPA is below a 3.0, you should not include it on your resume. However, this is something that you may want to discuss on a case-by-case issue with your career counselor.

If your GPA is above a 3.0, you typically should include that on your resume, as demonstrated below:

Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, DC
Juris Doctor, expected May 2015
GPA: x.xx

Please note that you may NOT round your GPA up or down.

1L FAQ – How do I send an “unofficial” transcript to employers? What if I’m applying to a position but I haven’t received my grades yet?

When an employer requests a transcript, it is appropriate to send an “unofficial” version unless the employer specifically requests an “official” copy.  You can create a PDF version of your unofficial transcript through MyAccess.  Go to the Student tab, click on Student Records and then Academic transcript.  Select Law Center, and then select PDF and hit submit.    Another option is to request one official copy of your transcript from the Registrar and scan it or make photocopies.  For instructions on ordering an official transcript, please click here.

If you apply for positions prior to getting your grades, explain in your application that you should receive your grades at the end of January and will then update your application with your transcript.

World of Choices FAQs

I haven't RSVP'ed, is it too late for me to come?  No - we needed to get an approximate headcount for food, but we hope all interested 1Ls will join us on Wednesday, November 14th at 3:30pm.

Do I need to dress up?  No - there is no need to wear business attire.  Given that you will be meeting with attorneys with whom you may want to work at a later time, we encourage you not to wear jeans, but there is no formal dress code.

Is World of Choices a recruiting event?  Will I need to bring a resume?  No - while this program is designed to provide you with the opportunity to network with attorneys, it is not a formal recruiting program and it is not necessary for you to bring a resume.

Do I need to prepare anything in advance?  No - there is nothing that you need to formally prepare.  However, you may want to look at the list of participating attorneys (list will be posted on Hoya Headlines shortly) and come up with questions to ask the attorneys you are interested in speaking with.  You may want to ask what a typical day is like for them, what classes would be helpful if you want to pursue their practice area, and if there are internships/externships you could do in school that might be helpful in pursuing a career in their area.

FAQ: Is It Ever Possible To Ask For An Extension On An Offer?

According to the NALP guidelines, employers offering positions for the following summer to candidates not previously employed by them should leave those offers open for at least 28 days following the date of the offer letter or until December 30, whichever comes first. Additionally, the guidelines state that candidates may request an extension of the deadline until as late as April 1 if the student is actively pursuing government or public sector opportunities. The majority of law firm employers abide by these guidelines.

EIW FAQ - Should I send a thank you note to my on-campus EIW interviewer?

No.  Employers uniformly tell us that they do not want or expect thank you notes after on-campus screening interviews.  For screening interviews in a firm's office, a thank you note may be appropriate - check in with your counselor if you have any questions.

As a reminder, however, thank you notes are appropriate and strongly encouraged after callback interviews!
