The National Education Association Office of General Counsel is pleased to announce an opening for a law fellow, starting in September 2013. The NEA Law Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for a recent law school graduate to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a wide variety of issues related to advancing the cause of public education and the interests of teachers and other education professionals.
NEA is the largest labor organization in the country representing over 3 million teachers and other education professionals. NEA works on diverse fronts to advance the cause of public education and to improve the working lives of school employees. NEA’s work includes substantial advocacy at the federal, state and local level in support of public education and educational employees and significant research and policy initiatives to promote educational quality and funding.
The NEA Office of General Counsel works on a wide array of legal matters to advance NEA’s overall mission including litigation, regulatory and advocacy matters. The NEA Office of General Counsel’s caseload includes cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and a small number of state appellate courts and administrative forums. In addition, the NEA Office of General Counsel frequently represents NEA in advocacy around federal regulatory initiatives affecting NEA members and leaders. The NEA Office of General Counsel also administers the National Organization of Lawyers for Educational Associations (“NOLEA”), which is a national network of lawyers representing school employees and their associations. NOLEA holds an annual education conference and serves as a resource for NOLEA members throughout the year.
The NEA Law Fellow will work primarily with lawyers in the NEA Office of General Counsel and with other union lawyers around the country on a wide range of activities. The Fellow will assist experienced lawyers working on cases and regulatory matters that affect public education and the rights of educators. Whenever possible, the NEA Law Fellow will be given the opportunity to participate in meetings with union lawyers and to attend hearings and other events in the DC area. The NEA Law Fellow will work out of NEA’s Office of General Counsel at NEA’s headquarters in Washington D.C. The fellowship is for a period of one year (through August 31, 2014), with the option of extending, upon mutual agreement, the fellowship for one additional year. Full vacation and health benefits are provided. Salary is commensurate with experience and in the range of $50 - $60,000 per year. Recent law graduates and judicial clerks are welcome to apply.
