Hot Jobs: DC Superior Court Clerkships for 3Ls

Judicial Clerkship Resources for 3Ls

In addition to OSCAR and the clerkship vacancies for state courts available on the OCS website at (http://www.law.georgetown.edu/careers/career-planning/fellowships-clerkships-honors/clerkships/resources/index.cfm), periodically check the vacancies listed on the US Courts website for additional clerkship opportunities.  The site can be found at www.uscourts.gov/careers/searchjobvacancies.aspx.  Current openings include:
•    U.S. Magistrate Judge Gregory J. Kelly, Middle District of Florida (Orlando) is seeking a clerk to begin in July.
•    U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Laporte, Northern District of California (San Francisco) is seeking a clerk to begin in May.
•    U.S. Magistrate Judge William Matthewman, Southern District of Florida (West Palm Beach) is seeking a clerk to begin in August.

This site – and individual court websites, occasionally – may be the only place certain judges post their vacancies.  For a comprehensive discussion about how clerkships might fit into your job search and career path, either immediately post-graduation or after a year or two of practice in the private or public sector, set up a counseling appointment with Amy Killoran in OCS.

2Ls – It’s Time to Start Thinking About Judicial Clerkships!

Whether you’ve planned for the past 18 months to pursue a post-graduation clerkship – or whether this is the first time you’ve considered the idea – NOW is the time to start thinking about whether and where you’re going to apply.  Some judges on the Maryland Court of Appeals will begin their hiring this month (see the chart at http://www.law.georgetown.edu/careers/upload/Maryland-Courts.pdf for details).  Other judges will hire throughout the coming year for 2014 positions.  OSCAR, an information source for federal clerkships, is now open to 2Ls.  Create your account at www.oscar.uscourts.gov.

If you’re interested in learning more about whether a clerkship might be right for you, make an appointment with your section counselor or with Amy Killoran, the OCS judicial clerkship counselor.

Recent Judicial Confirmations

The Senate recently confirmed Paul Grimm to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.  Judge Grimm has been a federal magistrate judge in Maryland for the past fifteen years, and has taught as an adjunct law professor at the University of Maryland and the University of Baltimore.  He has been called an “outstanding legal mind” who will bring “a wealth of experience to this position.”

Other recent judicial confirmations by the Senate include:

•    Terrence Berg, confirmed to the Eastern District of Michigan
•    Jesus Bernal, confirmed to the Central District of Florida
•    John Dowdell, confirmed to the Northern District of Oklahoma
•    Michael Shea, confirmed to the District of Connecticut
•    Mark Walker, confirmed to the Northern District of Florida.

Pathways to the Bench Video Series - Judge Denny Chin

Have you ever thought about becoming a judge or would like some additional perspective on judicial clerkships?  If so, you may find it inspiring to hear about the personal experiences of several judges currently sitting on the bench. In the latest video in the "Pathways to the Bench" series by the U.S. Courts, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Denny Chin, of New York City, is featured in a video profile.

In this inspirational series, federal judges talk about what they have learned from the challenges that prepared them to be public servants for justice. The series of four-minute vignettes can be used with high school students and youth groups to encourage them to overcome the inevitable obstacles on the way to their dreams.
