Attention 1L/1E/2Es – Important Fall Recruitment Dates and Information

Early Interview Week (EIW) is Georgetown’s largest on-campus private sector interview program and it will be held at the Washington Court Hotel across the street from the Law Center. This year’s program will take place August 12-16, 2013, with a bidding deadline of July 17. We will have another on-campus interview program for small and mid-sized employers in September – the September Interview Program (SIP), which will take place in the Office of Career Services. Bidding for SIP starts on August 5.
 
The On Tour Interview Programs (regional programs) all take place prior to EIW and require students that participate to travel to the program cities for interviews. On Tour Interviews will be held in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.
 
Along with the interview programs there will be two resume collect programs, Request for Resumes (RFR) and Diversity Resume Collect (DRC).  Resumes will be released to employers prior to Early Interview Week.

Bidding for these programs take place over the summer months, so Internet connectivity will be necessary. Please plan accordingly and take careful note of the bidding deadlines. Updates will continually be made via Hoya Headlines, Symplicity Announcements and the OCS website.

OCS Spring Hours and Walk-In Hours

Beginning Monday, January 14th, the Office of Career Services will be open the following hours:

Monday-Thursday 9am – 6pm
Friday 9am – 5pm

*If you need to schedule an appointment outside of normal business hours, please contact the OCS front desk at carsvcs1@law.georgetown.edu or by phone at 202-662-9300.

Counselors will hold daily walk-in hours where you can stop by with quick questions. Walk-ins are first come, first served, and last no more than ten minutes if others are waiting. Spring semester walk-in hours are scheduled as follows...please click on the headine above for walk-in hours.

Why do OCS and OPICS ask us to complete employment surveys?

Dear 2Ls and 3Ls,

Whether you have secured employment or are seeking, we want to hear from you. We know you have a very busy schedule, and asking you to complete another form is just another thing to add to an already long list of to-dos.   But here are some reasons why we ask you to complete the information:

1)    If you have secured a position for next summer or upon graduation, your information tells us that you have something lined up, and we can focus more directly on your classmates who continue to seek employment.  (Please don’t forget, however, that our offices are happy to speak with you about issues such as having a successful summer experience, strategies for planning your career, and any other career-related matter.)

2)    If you have not yet secured employment, we want to help.  We would like you to complete the survey as well.  Current seekers are added on mailing lists of hot jobs and are sent reminders about upcoming recruitment and informational programs.  We can only help you if we know you need help.

3)    Knowing which employers are particularly interested in Georgetown Law students and graduates, as well as timing of the job search, geographic interests, and salary information, informs our recruiting programs, information sessions and panel presentations, and resources for you, your fellow classmates, and alumni.  For example, last year we learned through surveys that more students were showing an interest in Chicago, so we organized and launched the Chicago On-Tour Interview program last summer.

4)    The ABA and National Association of Legal Recruitment Professionals (NALP) require us to report detailed employment information on our graduates.  These organizations use the information for a variety of reasons, including, studying employment trends for prospective and current students, as well as new law school graduates.  Their work in turn helps us provide the best service possible to students.  But we need your help to do that!

If you have not found employment for the summer or upon graduation yet, please come see us.  Between our two offices, we have many counselors who want to help you with your job search.  And as you secure employment, please remember to let us know and complete your employment survey.

New Career Counselor in OPICS - Welcome Morgan Lynn!

OPICS and OCS are excited to welcome Morgan Lynn, the Public Interest and Government Career counselor in OPICS who will be working with Section 2 and 4 1Ls!  Morgan graduated from Georgetown Law in 2007.  After graduation, Morgan received the Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellowship and worked in DC at Women Empowered Against Violence and Break the Cycle.  She represented survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in family law, protection order, and immigration matters and provided national training and technical assistance on the legal needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and teen survivors of abuse.  Morgan is thrilled to return to Georgetown and is ready to take appointments with anyone in Section 2 or 4 who wants to, but has not yet, met with OPICS. 1Ls: Begin scheduling your career counseling appointments today!

It’s nearing November 1, the date on which first years can begin meeting with a team counselor to begin discussing career options and job search strategies for the first summer.   Each first-year section is part of a three counselor team (see below) to ensure that each student receives individualized attention.  All first years should make their first appointment with any one of their assigned OCS or OPICS counselors.
