Summer Funding: The South Asian Bar Association of DC 2013 Public Interest Fellowship

SABA-DC has extended the deadline for its annual Public Interest Summer Fellowship until Friday, April 12, 2013.   Awards are up to $5,000 per student.  The primary purpose of the fellowship is to help fund law students in:

-       unpaid legal internships with a public interest organization
-       in the metropolitan D.C. area
-       focusing on the needs of the South Asian community.

The internships must be during the summer of 2013.  Past recipients of the fellowship have worked with a variety of organizations including the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative, the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center, Human Rights Watch, and SAALT (South Asian Americans Leading Together).

Summer Funding News: Earn a $1,175 Education Award through the AmeriCorps Summer Public Interest Law Program

Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that will provide 350 law students with the a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. The program offers participants a $1,175 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award voucher that can be used to pay current educational expenses or qualified student loans (please note that this is a voucher, not a cash stipend, and will be paid directly from AmeriCorps to your lender or school);

Summer Funding News: EJF Summer Funding: Initial Application Deadline -- Monday, 2/25 at 5:00pm

Please remember, the initial online application for EJF Summer 2013 funding is due Monday, February 25, 2013 at 5:00 pm. You do not need a job offer to submit the initial application but you do need to submit the application on time to secure the option of receiving EJF funding.

The EJF Board will be in touch with all students who submit the initial application with information about ways to fulfill the volunteer requirement.

Also, for those of you who were unable to attend the live EJF Information sessions, please view the session video and remember that you are responsible for knowing the information presented at the session.

The final application is due in person to OPICS by Wednesday, April 10th at 5:00 pm. Once you secure a position for the summer, we suggest that you begin collecting the materials for your final application. A completed application packet includes:
1. Final Application
2. Program Participation Agreement (signed by employer)
3. Fellowship Agreement (signed by student)
4. Assumption of Risk Form
5. "Working with Minors" Policy Certification

2013 Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) Guaranteed Summer Funding

EJF 2013 summer funding is available to JD students engaging in unpaid law-related work for a public interest organization or governmental entity (including judicial internships). EJF fellowships are guaranteed at $3,250 for six weeks of work. The program will run from June 3 through the end of summer payroll.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be JD students with a current status of 1L, 1E, 2E, 2L, or 3E, or joint or concurrent degree candidates graduating no sooner than December 2013. Projects must involve law-related work for a public interest organization or governmental entity.

All students considering public interest opportunities for the summer must submit the initial online application by Monday, February 25, at 5:00 pm. This is a mandatory deadline, but a confirmed offer of employment is NOT required by this date.

If you’re interested in receiving EJF funding, you must attend an EJF Information Session, on Wednesday, February 6, at 3:30 pm (Hart Auditorium) or Wednesday, February 13, at 5:00 pm (McDonough 206). You are responsible for knowing the information provided on the EJF website and at the Information Session, and adhering to the deadlines and rules.

In addition, all EJF participants must complete three volunteer hours, some of which will be phonebanking hours. EJF will send out further details and instructions to sign up for hours.

Summer Funding: Announcing the Gaylaw Education Fund DC Summer Fellowship

The Gaylaw Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) affiliate of Gaylaw, is proud to announce its 2012 Summer Fellowships, which will support law students working at DC-area LGBT legal non-profit organizations. The Fund hopes to encourage law students taking their first steps toward careers tackling our nation's most complex LGBT legal issues. The Fund will pay up to $1,000 to law students selected to be Gaylaw Education Fund 2012 Summer Fellows.

Qualifications:

Enrollment in a U.S. accredited law school
Summer employment offered by a non-profit legal organization in the Washington, DC metropolitan area
Primary focus of the organization must be on LGBT legal issues or serving LGBT clients
Employers must be non-profit and non-partisan
Commitment to work at least 20 hours per week for at least 10 weeks at the organization during the summer of 2012
Applicants must demonstrate commitment to a legal career serving the rights of LGBT clients or advocating for LGBT-specific legal issues
Total funding that the law student is already receiving for summer employment cannot exceed $5,000 (not including the Gaylaw Education Fund Summer Fellowship)

Americorps Summer Funding Deadline has been extended to April 10

Equal Justice Works is pleased to announce the launch of Summer Corps 2012!

 Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that in 2012 will provide 711 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,175 Legal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization.  The application period begins on March 1, 2012 and closes on April 10, 2012

Summer Corps supports projects in which students provide primarily direct legal services to low-income and underserved individuals. Community outreach and education components are also encouraged. Projects where students are doing pure policy work do not qualify for Summer Corps. 

In accordance with the federal regulations and program guidelines that govern AmeriCorps, Summer Corps host sites must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or qualifying public defender programs. These include:

Nonprofit organizations serving low-income and underserved communities; State, County, and Nonprofit public defender offices; Legal services organizations; and Civil rights organizations.

 The following settings do not qualify as Summer Corps host organizations:

Federal government agencies such as federal defender offices, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice; Government agencies including district attorney's offices and offices of the attorney general; Internationally-focused or internationally-based organizations; and Private law firms.
