Off-Campus Event - Careers in International Law

Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at Bryan Cave LLP (1155 F Street, NW)

The International Law Section of the D.C. Bar invites current members, law students and associates, and others interested in developing or advancing a career in international law for a lively discussion of “hot” career areas in private sector, government, and nonprofit settings. Attorneys with diverse experience themselves, in fields ranging from intellectual property and trade and export controls to human rights and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, will discuss their paths to their current positions and their tips for breaking into varied international law areas.  Light refreshments will be served.

Reminder - Interview Workshop on Wednesday, June 30th at 6pm

This summer, OCS is hosting several Interview Workshops to help students, particularly rising 2Ls, prepare for interviews coming up in the fall.  These workshops will offer insight and advice on how to research and prepare for interviews, how to handle tackle difficult questions, and how to best present yourself in a down economy.    

The first workshop will be held on Wednesday, June 30th at 6:00pm in McDonough 207.  

While the workshops are offered live in Washington, DC and New York, they will be videotaped and webcast for those students who are out of town for the summer.  Interviews are always an important component of the recruiting process, but are even more so now.  This is an invaluable opportunity to sharpen your skills, so we encourage all students to attend!

Additional workshops will be held on Wednesday, July 14th at 6:00pm (New York, NY) and Wednesday, August 18th at 6:00pm (Washington, DC). 

Nominating Judges to the DC Superior Court

Earlier this month, the Judicial Nomination Commission forwarded to President Obama the names of three lawyers for his consideration in selecting a nominee to fill a judicial vacancy on the DC Superior Court. The vacancy was created by the retirement of the Honorable Odessa F. Vincent, and the President has sixty days to select a nominee to fill this vacancy. Many attorneys, myself included, entered law school with little to no information about the realities of practicing law or even the range of positions that are available to smart folks who hold the almighty juris doctor degree.”

Recent Federal Court Nominations and Confirmations

President Obama has recently nominated two people to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and one person to the Central District of Illinois. Also, the Senate has recently confirmed several District Court judges this past week.
