Law Firm Pro Bono

Every summer OPICS compiles information about the pro bono offerings of most of the law firms participating in Georgetown's Early Interview Week (EIW) program. Additionally, OPICS maintains a list of most of the firms which offer an official public interest split summer opportunity, which allows summer student associates to spend up to half their summer at the firm and half with a non-profit organization.

Using Hoya Headlines to Prepare for Fall Recruiting

As you begin to prepare for fall recruiting, please remember to use Hoya Headlines as a resource.  Clicking on the tabs on the right-hand side of the page will lead you to a wealth of information on employers. 

For example, you can browse the “Geographic locations” tab and find posts such as “What’s it like to practice in the Pacific Northwest?” and “Clerking in Delaware.”  The “Legal News” tab includes links to relevant articles from the past several months, including a recent article titled "Behind Closed Doors: What One Firm Looks For in Summer Associates."  And the “OCS Programs” and “Off-Campus Programs” tabs provide information about upcoming events that may be of interest to learn more about specific practice areas or job search strategies – for example, OCS Interviewing Workshops and Practical Advice for Law Students and Recent Graduates Pursuing a Career in Plaintiffs’ Civil Rights and Employment Law. 

Finally, make sure you have subscribed to Hoya Headlines via RSS feed or daily e-mail digest so you are sure to get all OCS news in a timely manner.  This is our primary vehicle for communicating with students, and it is where we will post all updates and deadline reminders for fall recruiting.   

Off-Campus Event in New York City - "Why Antitrust?"

The New York State Bar Association will be hosting a panel on “Why Antitrust?” on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 from 9:30 – 11:00am at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City (125 Broad Street, at Water Street, 37th floor).  This is an opportunity for law students to discuss with recent law graduates why they chose to practice antitrust law.

“Many of Marcus Peterson's fellow alumni from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, are still cooling their heels after graduating one year ago, waiting to start law firm jobs thanks to long deferments.  Not Peterson. He spent the past 10 months on the job in Howrey's Los Angeles office, bouncing among firm-sponsored classes, pro bono cases, regular billable work and shadowing partners. It's not the first-year associate experience he was anticipating. ‘I kind of assumed that you spent the first couple of years doing doc review,’ he said. Instead, ‘I've had some good substantive experiences. I'm preparing to argue in front of an administrative law judge this month.’”
