Have you ever wondered what it would be like to practice law in California? Then you’ll want to attend OCS’s upcoming presentation on the California market by Amber Handman, a recruiter with SFB Search in Los Angeles. Her program will highlight the types of clients you might have, practices indigenous to the geographic market, hiring trends, what it’s like to live there and why you might want to practice there. The program will be at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 20 in McDonough 164.

Business Development Techniques – DC Bar Event on Thurs., April 28th at 12pm

Learn how to develop business from a solo practitioner, the managing partner of a medium-size boutique, a big firm lawyer, and a former lawyer turned business development coach. This panel of experts will give you practical techniques that will help you bring in business while managing your case load.  This program will be held on Thursday, April 28th from 12-1:30pm at the DC Bar Conference Center (1101 K Street, NW).  The cost is $15 for law students.  For more information, please click here.

If you have considered opening your own firm after graduation or at some point later in your career, you won’t want to miss this presentation by Carolyn Elefant, author of www.myshingle.com, on Monday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m. in McDonough 588.  MyShingle.com is a blog aimed at attorneys who are solo practitioners or who work at small firms.  Carolyn started her own firm in 1993 and has continued practicing while also actively blogging and writing.  In 2008, she published her book, “Solo by Choice: How to Be the Lawyer You Always Wanted to Be” and is an active speaker at conferences and law firm events on solo practice, social media and small firm practice trends.  This will be a great opportunity to learn first-hand of the considerations to weigh before starting your own practice.  Light refreshments will be served.

If so, join the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) and the Office of Career Services (OCS) to get the scoop directly from practicing attorneys in animal law. Speakers from the Humane Society of the United States, The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine and Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal will discuss what it is like to practice law on behalf of the animals and the path they took to to get where they are.

2011-2012 Human Rights Fact-finding Experiential Seminar Info Session

2011-2012 Human Rights Fact-finding Project
Wednesday, April 20th

Every year, Georgetown Human Rights Action and the Human Rights Institute identify a topic for a human rights fact-finding mission. The project is supported by a year-long experiential seminar that gives students an opportunity to work as human rights investigators—researching a human rights problem in depth, conducting extensive interviews on the subject, drafting a comprehensive report on their findings, and engaging in related advocacy. In 2011–2012, the fact-finding mission will focus on Vulnerable Children and the School-to-Prison Pipeline.
