ABOUT OUR DIRECTOR

JOSEPH A. PAGE , the Director of the Center for the Advancement of the Rule of Law in the Americas (CAROLA) and a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center since 1968, began writing about Argentina and Brazil in 1963.  

His first book, The Revolution That Never Was: Northeast Brazil, 1955-1964 , appeared in 1972, and describes the political and social ferment that convulsed Brazil's Northeast in the years before the 1964 military coup.   It was later translated into Portuguese by the distinguished Brazilian playwright Ariano Suassuna.

Professor Page then switched countries, languages and genres, and wrote a biography of Argentina's most famous political figure. Peron: A Biography appeared in 1983 .   His wife Martha Gil-Montero translated the book into Spanish and it was a bestseller for five months in Argentina.   A revised edition of the Spanish version was published in 1999.

Professor Page then re-directed his attention to Brazil.   His 1995 book, The Brazilians , attempts to explain what makes Brazilians Brazilian.   A Spanish translation, entitled Brasil: El gigante vecino, has been published in Argentina.   

In 1996 he contributed an extensive introduction to Evita: In My Own Words , which published for the first time in English a manuscript believed to be adapted from death-bed dictation by Eva Perón.   The book has been translated into Italian, German, Dutch and Spanish.

He is currently working on a revised edition of the English version of Peron , which will be published by the University of Pittsburgh Press.

His articles and book reviews on Latin America have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic, the Nation, the New Republic, Commonweal, America, the Washington Post,   the Christian Science Monitor, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Boston Globe, the Denver Post, the Miami Herald, Clarín, La Nación, Noticias, Jornal do Brasil, and Américas, the magazine of the Organization of American States.   He has also written the liner notes for "A Brasilian Christmas," a compact disc issued by Astor Place Recording in 1996.

He serves as an associated faculty member of the Institute for International Economic Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, and the Latin American Studies Program and the Brazilian Studies Program at Georgetown University
