Application Instructions ruler

TO APPLY FOR ANY CLINIC OFFERED IN FALL 2008, SPRING 2009, OR THE ENTIRE 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR, FOLLOW THESE THREE STEPS:

FIRST: Submit the general clinic application form online, by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25. You can access the online application beginning Thursday, March 13.

On the general clinic application, you will be asked to rank the clinics to which you seek admission in order of preference (1, 2, 3, etc., with 1 being your first choice). If you apply to a one-semester clinic offered in both the fall and spring semesters (Center for Applied Legal Studies, Domestic Violence, Federal Legislation and Administrative, Institute for Public Representation, and International Women’s Human Rights), indicate the semester(s) in which you are willing to take the clinic. If you apply to the Juvenile Justice Clinic, indicate whether you would prefer to take the fall semester clinic or the full year clinic. See selecting a clinic for additional guidance on the ranking process.

An alphabetical list of all applicants will be posted at http://www.law.georgetown.edu/clinics/ on March 26 at 5:00 p.m. If your name is not on the list, please contact Mujadala Abdul-Majid (662-9862; mma36@law.georgetown.edu) immediately.

If you submit your online application prior to the March 25 deadline, and you wish to change any of the information you submitted, including the order in which you ranked your clinic preferences, you can do so by accessing the online application again. This will bring you back to your application, which you will then be able to update and re-submit. After the March 25 deadline, applicants who wish to change their clinic rankings must request permission to do so from Dean Cantalupo no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Such requests will only be granted in the case of a schedule conflict with another course, or for compelling personal circumstances. Class schedules for all courses offered during the 2008-09 academic year will be available online by April 2. As a result, students will have an opportunity to view the class schedules and change their clinic rankings if a scheduling conflict becomes apparent.

SECOND: Complete any clinic-specific application requirements by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1.

A clinic may require students to attend an interview, or to submit a detailed supplemental application form, a resume, statement of interest and/or writing sample. You should carefully read the clinic-specific information contained on this web page for instructions on any additional action that may be required of applicants to a particular clinic. All supplemental applications and written materials must be submitted to the respective clinic offices in hard copy no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1 . If you are applying to a clinic that requires submission of a supplemental application, you may use the hard copies available in the Clinic Information and Application packet, or you may download Microsoft Word versions of the forms so that you can type the forms on your computer and print them out. Unless otherwise indicated in the application instructions of a particular clinic, electronic submissions of supplemental applications and materials will not be accepted. To access a particular supplemental application form, go to http://www.law.georgetown.edu/clinics/InformationPacket.cfm. Click on the name of the clinic to which you are applying then click on the Supplemental Application link that will appear in the contents box on the left hand side of the page to download the form.

THIRD: Accept Your Clinic Offer.

A notice with the names of students accepted into a clinic will be posted on the web (http://www.law.georgetown.edu/clinics/) on Tuesday, April 15 at 5:00 p.m. Students must accept or reject the offer by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17. To accept or reject your offer you must call or stop by the particular clinic in which you have been offered a seat.  Failure to indicate acceptance may result in re-assignment of the opening to another applicant. Oversubscribed clinics will maintain waiting lists so that they can promptly fill spaces vacated by any students who decline their offer or later withdraw from the clinic. Thus, an applicant not accepted on April 15 may nevertheless ultimately obtain a place in a clinic.  See FAQ #27 and 28 for more information regarding the waitlist process.

NOTE ON SUMMER CLINICS: The preceding instructions pertain only to clinics offered in the 2008-09 academic year. There will be a separate application process for summer 2008 clinics. Contingent on sufficient enrollment, we will offer two clinics in summer 2008: Street Law in the Community and Law Students in Court. Part-time students will be given preference for selection in these clinics, assuming they meet the other admission criteria. To apply for either of these clinics, pick up an application and course descriptions in room 352 or the Registrar’s Office beginning April 7. The application materials will also be available on the web (http://www.law.georgetown.edu/clinics/) as of April 7. Submit your application in hard copy to room 352 by 5:00 p.m., April 16. Students are permitted to apply for a summer clinic and a clinic offered in the 2008-09 academic year; however, seats in summer clinics will be given first to those students who do not obtain a seat in a clinic offered during the academic year.
