Alumni comments on the Public Interest Law Scholars Program

Katherine Barton, Attorney, Environment and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice

PILS gave us an invaluable network of public interest contacts among the the students, the faculty, and the government and nonprofit communities. That network helped us explore public service projects, stay focused on our goals, and find great public interest jobs when we graduated.

Richard Dieter, Executive Director, Death Penalty Information Center

My public interest law job is attacking capital punishment systematically. As the director of the Death Penalty Information Center, I am continually researching and reporting on the failure of the death penalty. PILS served as an excellent reminder that the very content of the law is up to us. rcd2

Lee McGoldrick, Vice President, Teach for America
The PILS Program is what drew me to Georgetown University Law Center. It provided me with the support, encouragement and inspiration to strive toward and realize my goals in public interest law.

Jennifer L. Renne, Assistant Director, Center on Children and the Law, American Bar Association

I knew prior to entering law school that I wanted to work for social change, and that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of people typically left out of the political process. The PILS program was an exciting introduction to the endless possibilities as a public interest lawyer.

The camaraderie of my fellow PILS students and the support of PILS faculty and mentors helped me focus my career goals and introduced me to the larger public interest legal community. A PILS-funded summer internship involving protecting the rights of Native Alaskans in the Anchorage office of the Department of the Interior led directly to my rewarding public interest career.
