Infrastructure Projects in Developing and Transition Countries

The course will offer an overview of all aspects of this sophisticated transaction involving developing and transition countries in sectors including power, telecommunications, transportation, water and social sectors. We will deal with project finance and other means of financing large-scale infrastructure (and possibly some natural resources) projects. In particular, we will identify the various stakeholders and their respective interests; consider issues of policy and the legal framework from both the host country and investor/lender perspectives; the matrix of contractual arrangements, including concession agreements and their negotiations; and allocation of risk, especially political risk issues.

Recommended: Prior exposure to privatization and project finance concepts would be helpful, but not necessary.

Mutually Excluded Courses:
Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: Infrastructure Projects in Developing and Transition Countries; International Finance (Professor Hagler); International Project Finance; International Project Finance and Investment; International Project Finance & Development: Case Studies. However, students who have previously taken International Finance (Professor Asser) may take one of the above courses other than International Finance (Professor Hagler) for credit.
