Basic Accounting Concepts for Lawyers

    This is a basic course for students with NO accounting background or experience. A student will learn what an asset and a liability are, what the basic financial statements are, how financial statements are developed from the underlying accounting information of a company, and how the basic transactions of a business affect each line item of each financial statement. Students will learn how to prepare a basic corporate financial statement. Methods will include reading and text exercises, class lectures and case exercises. Grading may be based on a midterm examination and a final examination.

Students may not receive credit for both this course and any of the following: Accounting Concepts for Lawyers, Accounting for Lawyers, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Accounting for Corporate and Securities Lawyers, or Accounting for Securities Lawyers.

     Attendance at the first class is mandatory. This class is intended for students who have NO accounting background. Students may be denied credit if they have taken a prior accounting course. This class meets on Thursdays from 8:00AM - 9:50AM.
