Professor Mark Cohen is a Co-Founder of Clearspire (www.clearspire.com), a groundbreaking legal service provider whose disruptive, proprietary IT platform and reengineered legal model has been reported in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, The ABA Journal, Reuters, and a host of other sources. He serves as the Managing Director of Clearspire Law Company, overseeing all matters related to the practice of law. He has had a distinguished 30-year legal career prior to Clearspire, serving as an award-winning Assistant United States Attorney (Southern District of Florida, Civil Division); the youngest partner in what was then the nation’s largest law firm, Finley Kumble; and as founder and managing partner of a national litigation boutique firm, Mark A. Cohen & Associates. Professor Cohen was a nationally recognized civil trial lawyer who tried 57 major civil cases during his career as well as numerous appeals, mediations, and arbitrations. He personally represented more than 50 of the Fortune 500 companies as well as five foreign sovereign nations in a wide array of litigation matters including numerous class actions, multi-district litigation cases, as well as mass torts. Professor Cohen was appointed Receiver of FBA, a global aviation parts company, by the Hon. Richard Owen, United States District Court Judge (S.D.N.Y.). During his 10-year Receivership, Professor Cohen managed the global operations of the company, including its legal matters, throughout Europe, Asia, and Latin America, resulting in the repatriation of $100M in assets. Professor Cohen also served as outside general counsel for three insurance companies during his years in private practice. He has the unusual qualification of being a significant provider, manager, and consumer of legal services both domestically and internationally. Professor Cohen was a large-scale, early adopter of information technology in the delivery of legal services. More than 20 years ago, he commissioned an IT platform for his multi-city law firm that included an electronic law library accessible to all attorneys from their desktop computers, videoconferencing, and a then state-of-the art data retrieval system. He was an early proponent of “flex-time” as well as fixed-price billing. He worked closely with a number of senior in-house counsel of F500 companies to streamline litigation portfolio management. He was also an early participant in legal process outsourcing ("LPO"), managing large-scale document review and e-discovery projects conducted in India and the Caribbean. Professor Cohen is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Vassar College and the College’s first Rhodes Scholar Nominee. He earned three postgraduate degrees from Oxford University (law and anthropology), and a law degree from the University of Connecticut.
