Biography

B.S.F.S., Georgetown; M. Phil., Cambridge; J.D., Harvard. Professor Clement served until recently as the 43rd Solicitor General of the United States and previously served as the Principal Deputy Solicitor General at the Justice Department. During his time at the Department, Professor Clement argued 49 Supreme Court cases and many of the significant lower court cases challenging aspects of the President's response to the attacks of September 11th. Prior to joining the Department, Professor Clement was a partner at King & Spalding heading the firm's appellate practice. Professor Clement previously served as Chief Counsel, Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution, Federalism & Property Rights, U.S. Senate, and was a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge Laurence Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit.
