This course examines the law of copyright and its role within the overall framework of intellectual property law.  Topics covered include the requirements for copyrightability; the rights that copyright law confers on authors; the exceptions and limitations that are designed to protect the public interest in access to creative works and their public domain building blocks; the rules and practical considerations that govern licensing and enforcement of copyrights; the legal issues surrounding contractual and technological protection of copyrighted works; and the scope of copyright preemption of state law. Throughout the course, will consider the challenges posed by digital technologies and information products and the increasing globalization of copyright law.
