The office only accepts applications for attorney positions from barred attorneys. Applicants can be barred in Maryland or any other State.
MD Rule 15 allows out of state barred attorneys to practice for 2 years under a certificate issued by the Court of Appeals. However, the office requires the new hire to sit for, pass and be sworn in to the next bar after the date that they are hired.
Of course, if someone is hired in June they would not have to sit in July but must sit in February.
Currently the office is in a hiring freeze, however, under normal circumstances there is no specific time for hiring since when they are not under a freeze they hire as needed, i.e., when attorneys leave, retire, transfer, etc.
Interview Process:
Initial Hiring Committee Interview (conducted once a month).
Interview at the Office where the Vacancy exists.
Interview with the Public Defender.
Documents: Current Resume, Cover Letter, OPD Attorney Application and 3 written letters of reference.

The office hires volunteer law clerks and interns for all semesters and for the summer.
