The office hires directly out of law school as well as from clerkships.
Information about the program:
In the criminal practice, the Legal Aid Society has close to 500 attorneys. New attorneys almost always start in the trial division (Criminal Defense Division) or in Parole Revocation. The Juvenile Right Practice has attorneys who specialize in juvenile delinquency, though more of their attorney start in child protection. Attorneys start out handling misdemeanors and progress to light felonies and so on.
Significant Amount of Training! There is a fair amount of training which includes Lunch and the Law sessions in each office. Last year they had a two day Forensic Symposium (DNA, sex, arson, eyewitness and false confession) and a major cross examination session with Larry Pozner. They completed Suppression Hearing training and Hofstra Law School. They plan to have a Litigating a Confession Case with Richard Ofshe and others. They do a mock trial every summer. Depending on budget availabilities they have routinely sent attorneys to outside training (local, state and national).
