This course examines the law of copyright and its role within the overall framework of intellectual property law.  Topics covered include the requirements for copyrightability; the rules that govern acquisition, duration, and transfer of copyright; the kinds of works that can and cannot be protected; the rights that copyright law confers on authors; the exceptions and limitations that are designed to protect the public interest in access to creative works and their public domain building blocks; the legal issues surrounding technological protection of copyrighted works; and the scope of copyright preemption of state law.  We also will consider the challenges posed by new technologies and information products and the increasing globalization of copyright law.
