Brian P. Kaufman

B.A., Duke; J.D., Northwestern; LL.M.(Taxation), Georgetown. Professor Brian P. Kaufman is Director of Tax Audits and Tax Counsel for Capital One Financial Corporation. Previously he was an attorney with the Washington, DC law firm of Steptoe & Johnson LLP where his practice focused on tax controversy and tax litigation matters. Prior to joining Steptoe, Professor Kaufman was a Trial Attorney for the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice where he represented the United States in a broad range of civil tax controversies in the United States district courts and bankruptcy courts. Professor Kaufman was a member of the Attorney General's Honor Program and received the Tax Division's Outstanding Attorney Award in 2000. He is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the District of Columbia Bar Association's Tax Section and an officer of the Court Practice and Procedure Committee of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association. Professor Kaufman received his L.L.M. in Taxation, with distinction, from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2000. He graduated from Northwestern University School of Law, cum laude, in 1995, where he was a Note & Comment Editor for the Northwestern University Law Review. He graduated from Duke University, cum laude, in 1992, with a B.A. in Public Policy Studies and Economics.
