Submitting a Paper to SSRN & BePress

Frequently Asked Questions

What are BePress and SSRN?

The BePress Legal Scholarship Repository and the Social Science Research Network both provide a free and persistent point of access for scholarship created by faculty at Georgetown Law and are tools for increasing the visibility of faculty scholarship.  Both services permit faculty to post academic papers as a PDF document, along with an abstract and subject classification information for each posted paper.  Faculty may also subscribe to subject-specific e-mail newsletters from both services.  These periodic newsletters provide the abstracts of papers recently submitted to the respective services and links to the papers.

How do I submit my paper to SSRN & BePress?

To submit, please use our web submission form.

After I've submitted my paper, how long will it take for it to appear?

A paper submitted to BePress will be posted within 24 hours.

SSRN approves each paper prior to posting.  They have provided the following timetable as a guide:

  • It can take up to two days for articles to appear in a Georgetown series. SSRN personnel check each posting to make sure it complies with their rules and while they are doing their best to clear the queue each business day; however, they make no guarantees.

  • If you post to a non-GULC series, it could take up to three days for your article to appear.

  • If you post to a subject-matter journal, it could take as long as three months for your article to be reviewed and posted.

What is the difference between SSRN and BePress, and why should my papers be posted to both services?

SSRN and BePress provide comparable services.  Both provide posting opportunities, searching capabilities for posted papers and email notifications of recently posted papers.  Although the services are similar, they have the potential to target different audiences.  Posting to both services provides different options for accessing your work and the possibility of greater dissemination.  The services have comparable downloads-per-posted-days rates.

Can I submit my papers to just one service?

Yes.  You may request that your papers only be posted to one service, but posting to both should provide greater exposure and more total downloads.

Can I submit my paper to a non-Georgetown series on SSRN?

Yes. You can submit your paper to any series that you would like, but the abstract will only be included in the Georgetown email bulletins if it is posted to a SSRN Georgetown series.  Please note that it can take as long as three months for your paper to be reviewed and posted to a non-Georgetown series on SSRN.

How do I make a revision to a paper that has already been posted?

To make a revision, send an email to Jennifer Davitt at papers@law.georgetown.edu with the subject line “Working Paper Revision.” Attach the revised paper to the email. In the text of the email, include any changes to the author(s), title, abstract, keywords, or JEL codes that are necessary. We will update the information at SSRN and BePress and upload the new version of the paper. You will be notified by SSRN and BePress when the revision has been completed.

Once I submit a paper to SSRN or BePress do I have to leave it up for any given period of time?

No. We will immediately remove your paper any time you would like.

Is there a fee to submit a paper to SSRN or BePress?

No fee is charged for the submission of abstracts and papers to SSRN, BePress or for publication in the SSRN Georgetown series email journals. Authors are encouraged to submit all their research papers, including older papers.

How do I submit a paper to a journal via ExpressO?

You can submit manuscripts electronically to multiple law journals of your choosing using the BePress ExpressO service.  Please contact Anna Selden with any questions.

I still have a question. Who do I contact for more information?

Contact Jennifer Davitt at papers@law.georgetown.edu or (202) 662-9145 with any questions.
