DATES OF PROGRAM: AUGUST 14 - 25, 2006
The U.S. Legal Writing Program for International Lawyers will be offered to incoming Georgetown international LL.M. students during Summer 2006. The course will familiarize students with two specific forms of U.S. legal writing: the client letter and the client memorandum. Building on a specific legal problem introduced in the Foundations course, we will analyze several relevant examples of case law. We will also analyze examples of successful client letters and memos. Students will be expected to write a professional quality client letter and a short memo. A major focus of the course will be identifying and producing common law argumentation. Pertinent grammatical issues that arise in the students’ writing will be addressed. NB: The course is designed as a complement to the Foundations of American Law and Legal SCHEDULE This is a two-week program, held from August 14 - 25, 2006. Classes will be held at the Law Center Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students will be expected to write every day. Each student will be assigned an individual instructor and will receive detailed feedback on his or her writing on a daily basis. In addition, students should expect to spend a minimum of two hours a day writing outside of class. INSTRUCTORS The class will be coordinated by Joy Johnston, a graduate of Georgetown University’s Applied Linguistics program, who has extensive experience teaching English writing for professionals, including U.S. legal writing for international lawyers.
