  2. Organizes events and conferences to enrich understanding and discussion of contemporary problems in environmental and land use law and policy.
  3. Promotes communication and mutual support among faculty, students, and alumni working in environmental and land use law, including publication of an electronic newsletter and maintenance of contact information of alumni working in the field.

February 3, 2010 – GELPP is pleased to announce the appointment of Georgetown Law Professor Richard Lazarus to the newly established Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. Professorship. Professor Peter Byrne, GELPP Faculty Director, introduced Prof. Lazarus during the ceremony held in Hart Auditorium on February 3rd.  Prof. Byrne Praised Prof. Lazarus for his contribution to the Georgetown Law Center and the field of Environmental Law.

“Prof Lazarus is simply the best environmental law of this generation his scholarship, teaching, advocacy, counsel, mentoring, institution building, and friendship have improved and invigorated environmental and natural resources law.” He also quoted Professor Jody Freeman of Harvard Law School, currently serving as Counselor for Energy and Climate Change in the White House: “Richard is the person in the legal academy I most admire, period.”  Professor Lazarus presented an interesting talk analyzing the Supreme Court’s interpretation over time of the National Environmental Policy Act, based on new research in the papers of the justices.

The event was attended by students, faculty, alumni, who came to celebrate Prof. Lazarus’ significant contribution to the field of Environmental Law, particularly his work before the Supreme Court.  Chief Justice Roberts was in attendance to celebrate his former roommate's special day.
