We strongly encourage GLS students to follow their interests into international law-related internships and employment during their summers or the school year. Because of our proximity to, and connections with, a variety of actors in international legal circles, we have enjoyed great success in helping our students to secure internships and jobs that suit their focus in international studies and complement their particular talents. Marilyn Tucker, Director of the International Internship Program in Georgetown’s Office of Career Services, is an enthusiastic part of the GLS team and has been instrumental in locating opportunities, at home and abroad, suitable for our GLS students. Some representative positions are:
- GLS students have enjoyed summer positions at law firms abroad—for example, in Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, France, Japan, Switzerland, Indonesia, Russia, and the United Kingdom—or at companies that operate across borders—for example, at General Electric International in China and Belgium.
- Other Global Law Scholars assume summer positions with international organizations or public-interest institutions abroad. Thus, we have sent our GLS students to summer jobs or internships at, among other organizations, the Legal Department of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Geneva, Switzerland; the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network in Manila, Philippines; the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes in Durban, South Africa; the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Cairo, Egypt, Panama City, Panama, and Ankara, Turkey; the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Kosovo; the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre in New Delhi, India; the Asia Foundation in Manila, Philippines; the International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights (INTERIGHTS) in London, England; and the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
- Many GLS students work in the summer or during the school year in internationally-oriented positions in Washington, D.C. or elsewhere in the United States. Such positions have included jobs or internships at the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Legal Adviser; the Organization of American States; the World Bank; the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of International Affairs; the Federal Trade Commission; the Nature Conservancy; the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; National Public Radio; and the U.S. Department of Justice.
- A number of our students have also elected to intern for federal or D.C. judges or in congressional offices while at the Law Center.
Students may also wish to check out Georgetown’s International Internships Program, through which Georgetown law students generally (including GLS participants) have obtained a variety of positions.
