Graduate Career and Professional Development Drop-in Sessions and Resume and Cover Letter Review

The members of Graduate Career and Professional Development are available to meet with current LL.M. students during regularly-scheduled drop-in sessions.  For your convenience, we are available for two hours every day of the week, scheduled at different times each day to accommodate students’ class schedules.  During the drop-in sessions, you may ask us questions about job search strategies, discuss comments that we have made to your resumes or cover letters, and seek advice on any other career or professional development issues.  We will gladly see as many students as time permits.

To meet with a Graduate Career and Professional Development advisor during a drop-in session, please stop by the Office of Graduate Programs (located in Suite 5008 of the Hotung building) at the following times:

  • Mondays from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Fridays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Students may also speak with a member of Graduate Career and Professional Development by telephone during the drop-in sessions.  Please call (202) 662-9036 during a regularly-scheduled drop-in session to speak with a Graduate Career and Professional Development advisor.

Drop-in sessions can sometimes be very popular, particularly when there are student deadlines.  Therefore, we encourage LL.M. students to arrive at the Office of Graduate Programs early in order to ensure that adequate time is devoted to the student's particular inquiry.

In addition to the regularly-scheduled drop-in sessions in the Fall and Spring semesters, Graduate Career and Professional Development will hold an evening hour once a month for part-time LL.M. students from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on the following dates:

  • September date to be announced
  • October date to be announced
  • November date to be announced
  • February date to be announced
  • March date to be announced
  • April date to be announced

Similar to our regularly-scheduled drop-in sessions, students attending our evening hours will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.  These sessions will be held in our Graduate Lounge on the sixth floor of the Hotung Building, just outside the Office of Graduate Programs (Hotung 5008).

Graduate Career and Professional Development office has put together a manual on how to draft resumes, called the LL.M. Professional Development Manual. We also suggest using this handbook as a career planning resource during your job search process. During the academic year, we encourage you to attend our workshops and drop-in sessions on resume, cover letter and business correspondence writing.

If you are interested in reviewing templates of resumes and cover letters in order to self-critique your resume, we encourage you to use the following link: http://www.law.georgetown.edu/graduate/SampleandGuidelinesforResumesandCoverLetters.htm.

Although there is no one correct way to write a resume or cover letter, it can be useful to have someone else review these items to help ensure that they are free and clear of errors. To facilitate this process, we offer a service whereby you can submit your resume and/or cover letter electronically for review. To use the resume review service, simply send your resume and/or your cover letter, starting on September 6, 2011 to:

Graduate Career and Professional Development will make every effort to reply within one week, although occasionally this is impossible due to high volume. For this reason, please send your resume and/or any other business correspondence well in advance of any deadline. We will make every effort to reply within one week.
