Tec de Monterrey Summer Program ruler

Georgetown University Law Center and the Escuela de Graduados en Administración Pública y Política Pública (EGAP:  http://www.sistema.itesm.mx/egap/) at the Instituto Technologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), or Tec de Monterrey, have arranged a summer program for EGAP's students of international law.  This intense two-week program will introduce students to the U.S. legal system and aspects of U.S. procedural and substantive law, as well as using a problem-based approach  to introduce students to the issues faced by lawyers representing parties in transnational disputes and basic lawyering skills such as oral argument, client interviews, arbitration, and mediation.

The program is taught by Georgetown law faculty.  All the readings and the classroom instruction will be in English and will require high competence in English reading, speaking and comprehension skills.  Students should have English competence equivalent to a TOEFL of 250 (600 on the old paper-based test).

The 2008 program will be held at Georgetown Law Center from Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 20, 2008.  An opening reception will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 8, on the Main Campus of Georgetown University.  (In addition, there is a course offered at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. Click here to visit their web site.)

The 2008 program is designed to introduce students to the U.S. legal system and allow students to understand that system in a broader transnational context.  The first week will focus on a basic overview of the U.S. system, including constitutional law and the U.S. federal structure, U.S. civil procedure, an understanding of the common law approach to law, and the basic tools of computer-based legal research.  The second week will be built around a complex problem involving parties from several countries and will explore remedies available within and outside the U.S.  The classes during this week will be taught interactively and in connection with the problem, students will do mock client interviews, negotiations, and an oral argument.

A list of readings will be sent to students in advance, allowing sufficient time for the students to prepare before coming to Washington, DC.

Students participating in the Tec de Monterrey program live in the Gewirz Student Center – the housing facility located on the Law Center campus.   Each apartment is equipped with climate-controlled air conditioning, a kitchen, a bathroom, and separate bedrooms.  Additional facilities, such as laundry rooms, recreational lounges, and reading rooms are available.  The Law Center provides free shuttle service to various locations for grocery shopping and and there is 24-hour uniformed security and controlled building access.

The cost for student housing will be $60.00 - $64.00 per night.  There are two different types of apartments available; one is a 2-bedroom efficiency apartment (no separate living room) for $60.00/night, and one is a 2-bedroom apartment with a living room, for $64.00/night.  This rate includes linens and dishware as well as access to the Sport and Fitness center. This rate does not include meals. There is a cafeteria on campus and restaurants and cafes are nearby.

Students may indicate their preference for one of the two types of apartments, but space is limited, so we may not be able to give your first choice.
