This page details employment authorization information for the most common visa types for students at Georgetown Law. If your visa type is not listed below, please consult the Visa Coordinator for more information regarding employment restrictions in the United States. May only be employed by the foreign government entity sponsoring the A-1 visa. Spouses may request employment authorization using Form I-765 in conjunction with Form I-566, however, both the foreign diplomatic mission and the U.S. Department of State must endorse the request. The Law Center urges students not to accept employment while a full-time student. If you are offered a position on campus that is less than 15 hours per week, you must obtain prior, written permission from the international student advisor. Regarding off-campus employment, both “continuing students” (students not graduating at the end of the semester) and graduating students may file for Optional Practical Training 90-120 days prior to the start date of employment. F-1 students may begin employment only after receiving the Employment Authorization Document (EAD), and only for the dates listed on the EAD. G-1 or G-4 Representatives to International Organizations May only be employed by the international organization or foreign government you represent. Dependents may request employment authorization using Form I-765 in conjunction with Form I-566, however, both the international organization and the U.S. Department of State must endorse the request. May only be employed by the sponsoring institution that obtains USCIS approval for the visa. H1-B visa holders are prohibited from receiving payments from other organizations. The Law Center urges students not to accept employment while a full-time student. J-1 students must have the written authorization of their sponsor to begin employment, work only for the specified employer, and only on the dates authorized by the sponsor.
