Introduction
Georgetown University Law Center presents an exciting opportunity to study law this summer in London. This 4½-week summer law program offers six courses taught by distinguished professors from Georgetown and around the world. The program will include a speaker series and organized visits to legal landmarks such as the Royal Courts of Justice, the Central Criminal Court, and The Inns of Court. Enrollment is limited ensure small class sizes. The program is organized in cooperation with King's College London.
The Georgetown Law London Summer Program has continued a strong tradition of academic excellence established in 1988 with our first study abroad program. Beyond the summer program, the city of London offers countless additional experiences. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, London is an ideal location for study abroad, and is easily accessible to other major European cities by train or plane.

Academic Facilities
The program's administrative and faculty offices are located at Swan House at 37-39 High Holborn Street, at the head of Chancery Lane, in the heart of London's legal quarter. A few minutes walk south on Chancery Lane, students and faculty will have privileges at the King's College Law Library.
Classes will take place at the Strand Campus of King's College London, which is in easy walking distance of Swan House. Along with classroom and library access, students will have access to the King's College London's wireless network and to public computers on campus.

Credit, Eligibility, and Academic Standards
We offer six courses. A student may register for a maximum of 6 credits (two courses). Georgetown's usual academic requirements apply for the award of credit. Georgetown uses an "A - F" grading system. Pass-fail is not an option. Courses may not be audited.
Georgetown 's London Summer Program is offered as part of the curriculum of Georgetown University Law Center. It is accredited by the ABA and is open to students in good standing at ABA/AALS-accredited U.S. law schools and foreign law schools, as well as graduates of those institutions. Although the vast majority of students who participate in the program are from U.S. law schools, the London program welcomes applications from qualified students and graduates from foreign law schools. In recent years, one or two students from other countries have participated.
All currently enrolled Georgetown LLMs, regardless of division or country of first law degree, may apply to enroll in the London Summer Program for a single summer prior to their graduation from Georgetown. Summer credits may be applied towards the student's current Georgetown degree on a routine basis, but prior approval is required from the Office of Graduate Programs with respect to individual courses and number of credits. Up to four credits may be applied towards the student's LLM degree. All courses taken in the London Summer Program will be included on the student's transcript and all grades earned in these courses will be included in the student's grade point average. LLM students pay the current London Summer Program tuition and fees.
Other law schools have regularly approved transfer of Georgetown credits. However, each individual law school must determine the transferability of grades and credits earned in this program. Before applying to the program, students should contact the proper authority at their home school to ascertain if grades and/or credits will transfer.
We also remind students that they must check with their registrar's office to decide how the program fits into residency requirements. It is unlikely that participation in a summer program will accelerate graduation for a full-time student.

Dates, Tuition, and Fees
Georgetown Law's London Summer Program opens Sunday, July 11 with a mandatory orientation and a welcoming program for students and faculty. Classes begin Monday, July 12 and will continue for four weeks, ending Friday, August 6. Classes will meet every week day with the exception of Friday, July 30. Daily attendance and preparation for classes are required. Final examinations will be held on Monday, August 9 and Tuesday, August 10. All exams are handwritten.
The application fee is $40 and is non-refundable. Tuition for the London Summer Program is $4,500 and includes internet access at public KCL computers. There is also a $300 Activities Fee. Housing
The program reserves a limited amount of rooms at the Stamford Street Apartments, a King's College residence, from Friday, July 9 to Thursday, August 12, 2010. The facilities are located on the South Bank in the Waterloo area, a 10 minute walk to the King's College Strand Campus, where classes will be held. All rooms are singles and have private baths. There are shared kitchen facilities, but students must provide their own kitchenware and are responsible for their own meals. The closest tube station is Waterloo.
Students who want program housing should deposit as early as possible in order to secure a space, as housing is limited and available rooms are assigned on a first come, first served basis as deposits are received. |

Application
The Office of Transnational Programs will begin accepting applications in January 2010. To apply, create an online account and login here.
The deadline for receipt of all application materials is April 1, 2010. Enrollment is limited to ensure small classes. We make admission decisions on a rolling basis, so early application is recommended. Application review will begin following the posting of fall semester grades.
|
| |
| Admission and Payments
Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified within three to four weeks of receipt of all application materials. A partially refundable $250 tuition deposit (and a $200 housing deposit for those desiring program housing) will be due within two weeks of notification of acceptance, or, at the latest, April 15. These sums will be applied toward your final tuition and housing charges.
The summer program is unable to provide direct financial assistance to program participants. However, Georgetown University Law Center will process forms for loans or other benefits for which a student may be eligible. |

Accomodation for Disability
Georgetown University Law Center welcomes applications from students with disabilities. However, not all public buildings in the U.K. are handicap accessible. Applicants should be aware of these limitations.
Students in the London Summer Program who need accommodations for disability while in London must contact Marianne Huger, Director of Disability Services at Georgetown Law, within two weeks following admission. Ms. Huger can be reached at huger@law.georgetown.edu or 202-662-4042. The London Summer Program provides accommodations for students with disabilities including physical, psychological, and learning disabilities. Students are responsible for identifying themselves to Marianne Huger in sufficient time to allow for receipt of proper documentation and coordination of services.

Cancellation Policy
Georgetown reserves the right to alter or cancel this program. Cancellation would occur in the event of program under-enrollment by April 22, 2010, or unforeseen international events that could substantially inhibit program operations or seriously compromise student safety. In the event that the program is cancelled, the Law Center will make efforts to arrange for students to enroll in another program. If we cancel the program, all tuition and housing payments will be returned. Our first overseas program was in 1988; to date, we have never canceled a summer program. |

Travel, Passports, and Visas
Participants must make their own international travel arrangements as well as those for any subsequent travel within Europe. Many airlines and travel agencies offer attractive round-trip air fares. For example, STA, located in most large cities, caters to the student traveler.
Passports are required for travel to London and are the responsibility of each student. Contact the nearest State Department Office or Post Office for further information. Lines at Passport Offices can be very long, especially just before the summer holidays. Plan ahead and get your passport early!
Participants in Georgetown Law summer program who are citizens of the U.S. or of other non-visa national countries should be admitted to the U.K. as "student visitors" upon arrival in the U.K. Students should be ready to present the following information, if requested to do so, upon arrival:
-
Passport
-
Enrollment confirmation letter from Georgetown Law
-
Proof of onward journey (return plane ticket)
-
Proof that you have paid your bill for summer courses in full. We suggest that you print a copy of your student account statement from MyAccess after your bill has been paid.
-
Some guidance also suggests that student visitors need to provide proof that their education provider is accredited by certain accreditors. The Middlestates Commission on Higher Education is one such accreditor. We suggest that you print out the following to present if asked: http://www.msche.org/institutions_view.asp?idinstitution=243
-
Some guidance also suggests that students should be prepared to provide proof of financial support such as a bank statement.
If you are a national of a country that the U.K. Border Agency defines as a visa national country (see this website), you may require prior entry clearance before you arrive in the UK, in order to enter as a student visitor. You should consult the U.K. Visa Services website at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/. The following instructions might be helpful:
-
Go to http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/
-
Click on "Do I Need a Visa."
-
Fill in the boxes with the information that applies to you.
-
Under "What is the Purpose of your Visit," the Visit option applies to Student Visitors.
You should then be able to follow the process from there.
Students in need of prior entry clearance are responsible for applying for their own visas.
Please note that student visitors are not eligible to work at paid or unpaid employment, including internships, and may only stay in the UK for six months. This also applies to students who secure prior entry clearance as detailed above.
ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CURRENTLY IN THE US HOLDING A NON-IMMIGRANT VISA STATUS (Such as F1 Student or J1 Student Status): Before leaving the United States please contact Indira Dingledine (img4@law.georgetown.edu or (202) 662-9319), the Georgetown Law Center Visa Coordinator. There may be reentry concerns or other matters impacting your situation of which you are not aware. Please contact Indira for more information. |
