About the Program ruler
Introduction

Georgetown University Law Center presents an exciting opportunity to study law this summer in London. This 4½-week summer law program offers six courses taught by distinguished professors from Georgetown Law, University College London, and King's College London.  The program will include a speaker series and organized visits to legal landmarks such as the Royal Courts of Justice, the Central Criminal Court, and The Inns of Court. Enrollment is limited ensure small class sizes.  In 2008, 46 students participated in the program.  This included 13 students from other law schools.

The program is organized in cooperation with King's College London.

The Georgetown Program in London has continued a strong tradition of academic excellence established in 1988 with our first study abroad program.  Beyond the summer program, the city of London offers countless additional experiences. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, London is an ideal location for study abroad, and is easily accessible to other major European cities by train or plane.

Classes will take place at the Strand Campus of King’s College London, which is in easy walking distance of Swan House.  Along with classroom and library access, students will have access to the King’s College London’s wireless network and public computers on campus.

Admission and Payments

Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis.  Applicants will be notified within three to four weeks of receipt of all application materials. A partially refundable $250 tuition deposit (and a $200 housing deposit for those desiring program housing) will be due within three weeks after notification of acceptance. These sums will be applied toward your final tuition and housing charges.

The summer program is unable to provide direct financial assistance to program participants. However, Georgetown University Law Center will process forms for loans or other benefits for which a student may be eligible.

Although the vast majority of students who participate in the program are from U.S. law schools, the London program welcomes applications from qualified students and graduates from foreign law schools. In recent years, one or two students from other countries have participated. Countries represented recently include the United Kingdom, Spain, and Mexico.

*Students are eligible for a partial refund of tuition and Georgetown housing charges up to a maximum of the full amount less $550 if a serious medical condition or other emergency makes attendance impossible.  The maximum refund will be reduced by an amount equal to any unavoidable losses or costs (e.g., inability to re-rent a paid dorm room). Credit, Eligibility, and Academic Standards

We offer six courses. A student may register for a maximum of 6 credits (two courses). Georgetown's usual academic requirements apply for the award of credit. Georgetown uses an "A - F" grading system.  Pass-fail is not an option.  Courses may not be audited.

Georgetown's Summer Law Program in London is offered as part of the curriculum of Georgetown University Law Center. It is accredited by the ABA and is open to students in good standing at ABA/AALS-accredited U.S. law schools, foreign law schools, as well as graduates of those institutions.   Although the vast majority of students who participate in the program are from U.S. law schools, the London program welcomes applications from qualified students and graduates from foreign law schools.  In recent years, one or two students from other countries have participated.  Countries represented recently include the United Kingdom, Lebanon, and Italy.

All currently enrolled Georgetown LLMs, regardless of division or country of first law degree, may apply to enroll in the London Summer Program for a single summer prior to their graduation from Georgetown. Summer credits may be applied towards the student’s current Georgetown degree on a routine basis, but with prior approval required from the Office of Graduate Programs with specific respect to individual courses and number of credits. Up to four credits may be applied towards the student’s LLM degree.  LLM students pay the current London Summer Program tuition and fees.

Other law schools have regularly approved transfer of Georgetown credits. However, each individual law school must determine the transferability of grades and credits earned in this program. Before applying to the program, students should contact the proper authority at their home school to ascertain if grades and/or credits will transfer.

We also remind students that they must check with their Registrar's Office to decide how the program fits into residency requirements. It is unlikely that participation in a summer program will accelerate graduation for a full-time student. Course instruction will be in English.  Daily attendance and preparation for classes are required.

Georgetown Law Center welcomes applications from students with disabilities.  However, like many European countries, the United Kingdom does not have laws requiring public buildings to be handicap accessible.  Applicants should be aware of these limitations.

We ask that students with special needs or disabilities contact Georgetown immediately following admission, or earlier if you wish, in order to discuss possible arrangements for accommodation.

As always, students should be cautious and assume responsibility for their personal safety while traveling outside the United States. While the United Kingdom benefits from generally low crime rates, incidents of pickpocketing are extremely common. For more information on this subject, please check-out http://travel.state.gov/. Each student is encouraged to register on the State Department's web site at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/.

Housing

We have reserved a limited amount of rooms at the Stamford Street Apartments, a King's College residence, from Friday, July 10 to Thursday, August 13.  The facilities are located on the South Bank in the Waterloo area, a 10 minute walk to the King's College Strand Campus, where classes will be held.  All rooms are singles and have private baths.  There are shared kitchen facilities but students must provide their own kitchenware and are responsible for their own meals.  The closest tube station is Waterloo.

Housing Update (3/27/09)

Due to a high number of early applications and deposits, rooms at the Stamford Street Apartments have filled and we are currently assigning students to another King’s College facility, the Great Dover Street Apartments, as new deposits are received.  Students who want program housing should deposit as early as possible in order to secure a space.  Available rooms are assigned on a first come, first served basis as deposits are received.  Housing is limited and there is no guarantee that we will be able to provide a room at the King’s College dorm.  Information about Great Dover Street is provided below.

Great Dover Street Apartments

The Great Dover Street Apartments provide the same amenities as the Stamford Street Apartments in that all rooms are singles and have private baths.  There are shared kitchen facilities but students must provide their own kitchenware and are responsible for their own meals.  The closest tube stops are London Bridge (Northern and Jubilee Lines) and Borough (Northern Lines).  The cost is the same as the Stamford Street Apartments ($1890) and the dates are the same, July 10-August 13.  The Great Dover Street Apartments are further away from the King’s College Strand Campus, where classes will be held.  The walk is about 35-40 minutes.  Traveling by bus or tube can take about 35 minutes, depending on traffic.

Travel, Passports, and Visas

Updated 2/10/09

Participants must make their own international travel arrangements as well as those for any subsequent travel within Europe. Many airlines and travel agencies offer attractive round-trip air fares. For example, STA, located in most large cities, caters to the student traveler.

Passports are required for travel to London and are the responsibility of each student. Contact the nearest State Department Office or Post Office for further information. Lines at Passport Offices can be very long, especially just before the summer holidays. Plan ahead and get your passport early!

Participants who are U.S. citizens and will be studying in the U.K. for less then 6 months will be issued a student visitor visa upon arrival in the U.K. Students must present their enrollment confirmation letter from Georgetown Law and a round trip ticket to customs officials upon arrival in the U.K.  Some guidance also suggests that students should be prepared to provide proof of financial support such as a bank statement.

If you are a national of a country that the U.K. Border Agency defines as a visa national country (see http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/ecg/chapter2/), you may require prior entry clearance.  You should consult the U.K. Border Agency website at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ as well as the U.K. Visa Services website at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/. Students in need of prior entry clearance are responsible for applying for their own visas.

Please note that student visitors are not eligible to work at paid or unpaid employment, including internships.  This also applies to students who secure prior entry clearance as detailed above.

Cancellation Policy

Georgetown reserves the right to alter or cancel this program. Cancellation would occur in the event of program under-enrollment by April 23, 2009, or unforeseen international events that could substantially inhibit program operations or seriously compromise student safety. In the event that the program is cancelled, the Law Center will make efforts to arrange for students to enroll in another program.  If we cancel the program, all tuition and housing payments will be returned within 20 days. Our first overseas program was in 1988; to date, we have never canceled a summer program.

Program Administration

Professor Peter Tague is the on-site faculty director for the London Program. Cara Morris is the Deputy Director of the Office of Transnational Programs and will be on-site for the program's start-up. There will be additional on-site administrative support throughout the program.
