All Georgetown University community members can download Symantec Endpoint Protection software free of charge. Instructions for downloading, installing, and usingthe software are listed below.
Please note: It is very important that you uninstall any and all anti-virus programs that you are currently using before you install Symantec AntiVirus on your
computer.
DOWNLOADING
- Open your Internet browser and navigate to https://www4.georgetown.edu/uis/hoyacomputing/software/public/index.cfm.
- You will be prompted to login.
- Type your NetID in the Username field, your MyAccess password in the Password field, and click on the OK button.
- The University Information Services (UIS) Software Distribution Database page will open.
- Using the drop-down arrow to the right of the Select Specific Software field, choose the correct version of Symantec Antivirus for your computer.

- Click on the Select Software button.
- The Symantec Endpoint Protection page will open.
- Click on the Download for Free link.
- When prompted to run or save the download, choose Save and save the application to your desktop.
- The Symantec file will download onto your desktop
INSTALLING
- Close all open applications and windows.
- Double-click on the downloaded Symantec icon, located on your Desktop.
- A small Symantec Endpoint Protection dialog will appear, while the application prepares to install, installs and configures itself on your desktop.
- A Live Update dialog will appear and Symantec will connect to the Internet to download and install all of its needed updates. (This might take a few minutes. Be sure to let the process complete).
- When the process is complete, the Live Update dialog will disappear and you will be prompted to restart your computer.
- Do so.
USING
- Close all open applications and windows.
- Expand your system tray (the area to the left of the clock, located in the lower right-hand corner of your screen).
- Right-click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon, which looks like a shield.
- Left-click on the Open Symantec Endpoint Protection option.
- The Symantec Endpoint Protection window will open.
- Click on the Scan for Threats tab, located on the left-hand side of the window.
- Click on the Active Scan icon.

- An Active Scan dialog will appear and Symantec will begin its search for viruses on your computer. This process can last anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how many times you have run the software.
- When the process is complete, Symantec will list its findings.
- If any viruses are found, click on the Remove Risks Now button.
- If no viruses found (or after you have deleted all of the found viruses), click on the Close button.
- You will return to the Symantec Endpoint Protection window.
- Close that window.
You should always perform a live update before scanning your computer to make sure that you have the most up-to-date antivirus definitions.
UPDATING
- Expand your system tray, right-click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon, and choose the Open Symantec Endpoint Protection option.
- The Symantec Endpoint Protection window will open.
- Click on the LiveUpdate button.
- A Live Update dialog will appear and Symantec will connect to the Internet to download and install all available updates.
- When the process is complete, the Live Update dialog will disappear and the dates to the right of the protection software listed within the Symantec Endpoint Protection window will be current.
