April 2007 Dear First-Year Students: Congratulations on nearing the end of your first year of law school! As you begin thinking about the 2007 Write On competition, I encourage you to consider joining the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review. GIELR is the only environmentally-themed journal at Georgetown University Law Center. We have recently published articles and notes on such topics as the environmental effects of war, groundwater allocation regimes, carbon dioxide sequestration in oceans, and corporate responsibility for environmental values. As a member of GIELR, you will contribute to a publication that is read by scholars, practitioners, and interested persons the world over. GIELR staff members develop familiarity with various fields of international environmental law, learn about the process of scholarly publication, and work with an enthusiastic and interesting group of fellow students. First-year GIELR staff member requirements include source collection, blue-booking and fulfillment of regular office hours. Like the other journals at Georgetown Law, GIELR also requires you to write a student note. Our Writing Editor will work with you to plan your note project and is committed to helping you prepare a strong submission. Although interest and experience in international and environmental issues is not a requirement for membership, we do consider such factors in selecting our staff, and we encourage you to tell us about your background and interests in your personal statement. First-year grades and the Write On score each account for 40% of the selection criteria, while a personal statement and résumé together account for the remaining 20%. Although listing us anywhere in your preferences makes you eligible for consideration, we request that you preference us in the top half of your rankings. Good luck on the Write On! If you have any questions about the journal, please send me an email and we can get together over lunch or coffee. Best regards, Brett Marston
