GILJ Write on information ruler

Dear First Year Students:

Congratulations on making it through finals and completing your first year of law school! I hope you have a chance to celebrate and relax for at least a day or two before beginning the Write-On competition.

The Georgetown Immigration Law Journal is the only student-edited journal in the country that is devoted to the study of immigration and international migration. As such, we receive and publish articles from writers around the world. In this era of globalization, immigration is an extremely pertinent topic that transcends a variety of questions and subject areas. Our journal addresses issues within international law, human rights, national security, labor law, constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law and others. At its core, immigration law involves analysis of who we consider to be members of our society, who we want our laws to protect and whom we choose to exclude.

The mission of our journal is to provide a meaningful academic experience that is rewarding for each member. We make a point of making membership on our journal more than an exercise in bluebooking. Each second-year staff member will participate in the production process by editing articles and will write a scholarly note that may be submitted for publication. Our journal is dedicated to publishing the work of our members and therefore publishes shorter current development articles written by staff members in each issue. Finally, as an institution, the journal provides its staff members with a support network of advisors, professionals, and professors. Thus, you will gain invaluable writing, research and editing skills, as well as strong personal relationships with fellow staffers. In selecting new members to the journal, we consider the applicant's Write-On submission (70%) and Law Center grades (30%).

Next year's editorial board and senior staff are a great group of people who look forward to welcoming our new members in the fall. Good luck in the Write-On competition and have a great summer!

Best,

Emily Musser
