Notes Department ruler

An essential element of the Georgetown Law Journal's mission is to encourage and provide a forum for the publication of students' academic scholarship. In keeping with this goal, the Notes Department typically selects two or three student notes for publication in each issue.

Through an anonymous selection process, the Notes Department considers many aspects of each paper, including the timeliness of the issue discussed, the novelty of the author's argument and analysis, the appeal of the topic to a generalist legal audience, the quality of the writing, and the paper's compliance with current Bluebook standards.

Please scroll to the bottom of the page to see submission procedures. The Notes Department reserves the right to not consider notes that are submit in a manner other than in accordance with the below procedures.

2L Journal Members

Second-year members are required to submit a note for consideration to fulfill the writing component of their Journal experience. Members may submit their note in February or April of their second year or at the beginning of their third year. Members who submit their notes at an earlier date and are not selected for (or do not compete for) publication are free to re-submit their notes for publication at a later date.

3L Journal Members

Returning third-year Journal members whose notes were not selected for publication in the previous spring are invited to revise their papers during the summer and submit them in September, February or April of their third year for reconsideration. New papers also are accepted in the fall from returning third-year members.

Members Previously Selected for Publication

Members who have already had a note selected for publication may submit a second note if they desire at any later submission date (including the recently graduated submission date).

Recently Graduated Journal Members

Recently graduated Journal members may submit for consideration papers that they wrote while students at the Law Center. The deadline for these submissions falls in September following the students' graduation. The submission deadline for 2006 is September 8.

Non-Journal Member GULC Students

The Journal also invites the submission of papers by students who are not Journal members. These papers may be submitted for the September, December, February or April deadline. Second-year non-member students whose papers are selected for publication are offered membership on the Journal for the coming year.

Procedure for GULC Students

GULC students should submit 12 hard copies of their note to the Georgetown Law Journal office by 5 p.m. on the day of the submission deadline. The author's name should appear on only 1 copy of the note (that is, 11 copies should be entirely anonymous).

Summer Rolling Submissions

Beginning on June 4, 2006 we will be accepting notes on a rolling basis for the summer.  To submit your note, email a copy to Jessica Hayden at jjp24@law.georgetown.edu.  The deadline for rolling submissions is August 14, 2006.  This email procedure only applies to rolling submissions.  For all academic year submissions, you must submit through the traditional method of delivering 12 copies to the Journal office in EBW.
