News and Reports for August 2013

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

The following articles provide an overview to the issues surrounding the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) model, which offers online courses, generally free of charge, to students with lectures, interactive exercises, and discussion forums:

The MOOC List website provides a sample of Massive Open Online Courses related to law:

H20 Digital Casebook Platform

Professors interested in creating or using an online casebook may want to explore H2O, a new, freely available online casebook platform developed and provided by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the Harvard Law Library. Using H2O, professors can "freely develop, remix, and share online textbooks under a Creative Commons" license. In addition to cases, professors can add other text and documents as well as audio and video. Students can annotate and highlight—in multiple colors—and print pages from the casebook.

For more information on the project, visit the Berkman Center's website, and to view existing H2O casebooks—also called "playlists"—or get started developing your own, visit H2O.

Lexis Advance Icon Lexis Changes in June 2013

In June 2013, Lexis completed the previously announced migration to a single log-in system for Lexis Advance and Lexis.com, now accessible through the Lexis Law School homepage (http://www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool/). All academic Lexis.com IDs and passwords will no longer function; only Lexis Advance IDs will function. Below are some important changes.

  • New ID Requests: Faculty and staff who do not have a Lexis Advance ID should contact Thanh Nguyen, in Library Research Services, for assistance. (Library Research Services libraryresearch@law.georgetown.edu; 662-9073)

  • Lexis.com Content: You still have access to Lexis.com content, but must access it through Lexis Advance. Please see our instructions describing how to access Lexis.com once you have logged into Lexis Advance.

  • Bookmark: Please update your Lexis bookmarks with this URL.

  • Online Links: Due to this migration, many embedded links to Lexis.com resources in our Library Research Guides (and other resources) no longer work. The Library created instructions on how to locate a Lexis resource by title on both the Lexis Advance platform and on Lexis.com (accessed through Lexis Advance). View the instructions here. This is our short-term solution; we continue to work with Lexis to find a long-term solution for updating these links.

  • Alerts: Alerts saved on Lexis.com did not automatically move over to the Lexis Advance platform during the June migration. All Alerts can only be created in Lexis Advance now. If you “lost” any of your Lexis.com Alerts, our Lexis account executive, Lori Sorenson (lori.sorenson@lexisnexis.com), may have a record of your Alert content and may be able to help retrieve it. If you would like assistance setting up new Alerts on Lexis Advance you may find this Alert Tip Sheet helpful, as well as contacting your liaison librarian.

  • Printing to Lexis Printers: Documents on Lexis.com cannot be printed on the dedicated/free Lexis printer; but they can be downloaded, emailed, or printed from an attached printer. Documents from Lexis Advance can be printed to the dedicated Lexis printers.

  • Research History (Trail): This is available on Lexis Advance but no longer available on Lexis.com.
