News and Reports for March 2014

March Mobile App Recommendation

Jill Smith

With winter hanging on to the bitter end this year, it seems that many of us are yearning for spring. Warmer weather and sunshine will soon be luring all of us from our houses to enjoy outdoor pursuits. For many of us, this includes getting ready for gardening season. While gardening apps as a group seem to be sadly low quality (at least based on their average ratings), I was able to find a few that are worth checking out if you want some help planning and maintaining your garden.

Gardenate ($1.99 for iOS and Android) provides local planting information, cultivation tips, and a journal for you to keep track of your own plants. Garden Compass (free, iOS only) enables you to snap a photo of a plant or pest and submit it to experts who will identify it and give you advice. Garden Manager (free, Android only) reminds you to water, fertilize, or otherwise care for your plants and provides a journal to record your garden’s progress.

Cherry Blossoms at the Jefferson Memorial

March 20 also marks the beginning of the National Cherry Blossom Festival – if you are interested in attending, the Festival has its own free app for iOS and Android with various tools to help you plan a trip to the tidal basin.

The library maintains a database of useful mobile apps for research, scholarship, and teaching. If you would like to recommend additional apps for this database, please contact Jill Smith, Instructional Technology Librarian, at jas515@law.georgetown.edu or 202-662-9165.
